Problem

After upgrading from Microsoft Windows XP to Microsoft Vista operating system, users may experience a black screen or no video. The power light will be blinking or always on. Pressing the keyboard keys or moving the mouse will do nothing. The system at this stage will have to be shut down by the power button, then restarted. The issue will occur once the system has been upgraded to Microsoft Vista and then idle for 60 minutes. Microsoft Vista power management default settings are set to "Put the computer to sleep" in 60 minutes. Systems with older BIOS versions do not support the new S3 Power Management specification, required for the Microsoft Vista operating system. A black screen will be observed after the system has been idle for over an hour.

Symptom

After upgrading from Microsoft Windows XP to Microsoft Vista operating system, users may experience a black screen or no video. The power light will be blinking or always on. Pressing the keyboard keys or moving the mouse will do nothing. The system at this stage will have to be shut down by the power button, then restarted.

The issue will occur once the system has been upgraded to Microsoft Vista and then idle for 60 minutes. Microsoft Vista power management default settings are set to "Put the computer to sleep" in 60 minutes. Systems with older BIOS versions do not support the new S3 Power Management specification, required for the Microsoft Vista operating system.

A black screen will be observed after the system has been idle for over an hour.

Example: A user has upgraded to Microsoft Vista and then logged on. They have left the system sit idle for over an hour. They come back to see a black screen and move the mouse and press keyboard keys with no change. They are forced to push the power button and force restart of the system.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • IntelliStation M Pro, type 9229, any model
  • IntelliStation M Pro, type 9230, any model

This tip is not option specific.

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit Business Edition, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x64 Business, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x64 Enterprise, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x64 Home Basic Edition, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x64 Home Premium, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x64 Ultimate, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Business, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Enterprise, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Home Basic Edition, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Home Premium, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Starter Edition, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, x86 Ultimate, any service pack

Solution

For the systems listed below, a newer BIOS version is available on the IBM website to correct the issue. All other systems will have to use the workaround until a BIOS is released, per the details section below:

Workaround

Change sleep (standby) power options in Microsoft Windows:

  1. Log onto the Microsoft Vista operating system.
  2. Right click the desktop and choose "Personalize".
  3. In Screen Save Settings, click "Change power settings...".
  4. In "Select a power plan", under "Preferred Plans","Balanced", click "Change plan settings".
  5. In "Change settings for the plan:Balanced", in the "Put thecomputer to sleep:" drop down menu, select "Never".
  6. Click "Save changes".
  7. Close out all windows.

Additional information

The BIOS fix:

  There may be BIOS versions released after December 1, 2006 for the other affected systems that will alleviate the sleep issue. To determine this, check on your systems BIOS Change History file.

The Workaround Fix:

  If the sleep option is set to never, the system will not sleep (standby) ever.
