Problem

Troubleshooting tape drives attached to IBM server and IntelliStation products

Resolving The Problem

Note: Many tape drives that are returned for repair are not actually faulty hardware. Often times they are not at current firmware level, the drive head(s) is dirty and needs cleaning, or the log history indicates potential suspect or faulty media. None of these are reasons to replace a tape drive.

  1. To begin troubleshooting, check the following top issues. If your issue is listed, select the link, otherwise proceed to step 2.
  2. Confirm tape drive hardware compatibility with both the system and controller using the IBM ServerProven Web site.

  3. Confirm connectivity via SCSI bus between the drive, the operating system, and the tape backup software:

    1. Is the tape drive seen during POST/startup correctly?
      This is the starting point of tape drive hardware problem determination. Ensure that the Tape Drive/Library is recognized at a hardware level on it's SCSI chain. This is determined at the controller's BIOS utility. Two examples of SCSI BIOS Configuration Utilities are Adaptec's SCSISelect utility (Ctrl+A), and the IBM ServeRAID Mini-config utility (Ctrl+I). If a device is seen at a hardware level in the adapter BIOS, then backup software configuration might be the cause of the problem.
    2. If a device is not recognized, perform SCSI bus problem determination. Check for unique SCSI IDs, correct termination, bent SCSI connector pins, transfer speed of tape device. You may also try removing other devices from the SCSI bus as interference from another SCSI device may cause tape problems.
    3. Does the operating system see the drive?
    4. Does the tape backup application see the drive?

  4. Check the IBM tapetool to ensure the tape drive firmware and drivers are at the latest levels.

  5. Check the tape media. Are you using the proper and recommended tape media for the unit? Is the media known to be good? (e.g. it works in another drive). For Travan-based tape systems, be sure to retension the tape. Retensioning the tape cartridge is always recommended for optimal performance, particularly if using a new tape, after exposure to temperature changes or shock. Retensioning restores the proper tape tension to the media and removes tension to the media and removes unwanted tight spots that develop naturally on tape. If a tape cartridge has not been used for over a month, you should retension the cartridge before using it. If you ever have a problem reading a tape, retensioning may solve the problem. Always, check you backup software documentation, for specific instructions for tape retensioning. If a tape is dropped, always retension it before using it. Also, sometimes you must retension a tape several times.

  6. Clean the drive. How often do you clean the drive? Ensure the cleaning cartridge is the proper type for your drive, and that you are using it on a regular scheduled basis. Unlike most other options that are integrated into today's PCs, magnetic tape drives do require periodic cleaning as a means of preventative maintenance. Tape drives can require cleaning when changing to different types of media and dirty tape drives can cause a multitude of problems. Usual symptoms start with error messages to clean the drive (either by actual text messages from the backup application or by specific LED signals from the drive itself (see your User's Guide for the LED sequencing specific to your drive), and finally ending with outright drive failure Problem determination of tape drives should always include the elimination of tape drive cleaning issues such as cycle life of cleaning cartridges, environment, frequency of cleaning, and frequency / duration of use.

  7. Check the tape software to ensure it is at the latest build level. Contact the OEM software manufacturer to download any patches or code updates.

  8. Reset the tape drive.
    1. Press the Unload button to reset the tape drive.
    2. Power your system off, then on.

  9. Refer to your system's Hardware Maintenance Manual, or the tape drive User's Guide for appropriate installation, removal, and usage instructions.

  10. If the solution has been working for some period of time, and is now failing, What changed in the configuration since it last worked?

Basic SCSI bus problem determination (PD) checklist

  • Ensure that all power and signal cables are firmly and properly attached.

  • Ensure the length of all your SCSI cables don't exceed 3 meters (10 feet).

  • Ensure you've used the screws that came with the tape drive. Other screws could be too long and cause electrical shorts or mechanical problems.

  • Ensure there are not more than 16 SCSI devices (including the adapter) on one bus.

  • Check the SCSI ID jumper setting. No two SCSI devices can have the same SCSI ID.

  • Check that the parity jumper setting is correct for your computer.

  • Check that each end of the SCSI bus is terminated. There must be one terminator or a terminating device at the last active connector on the SCSI cable.

  • Remove the drive. Check for bent or misaligned pins. If there are no problems, reinstall the drive.

  • Reconfigure your SCSI adapter. You may need to change data transfer support from synchronous to asynchronous.

  • You may need to remove and reinstall existing devices.

  • If you cannot manually change the tape capacity, ensure the capacity you want is supported by the cartridge.


SCSI controller considerations

  • SCSI ID 5 or 6 is recommended for tape backup units attached to SCSI controllers. Tape backup unit SCSI IDs should generally be set to the highest priority. A CD-ROM drive should use a lower priority SCSI ID.

    Note: Although it is not a recommended configuration, if a tape backup unit shares a SCSI channel with a DASD device, then the DASD device should use a higher priority SCSI ID than the tape backup unit.

  • Ensure that Reverse BIOS scan is not enabled on controllers that allow it. This can cause the tape unit to be confused as a boot device at SCSI ID 6. If the unit is set to SCSI ID 6, make sure "Reverse BIOS scan" is disabled.

  • Set the Max Sync Transfer Rate to the default SCSI BIOS setting.

    Note: If I/O errors are encountered, lowering the transfer rate may help.

  • Set Initiate Wide Negotiation to the default SCSI BIOS setting.

    Note: As many of the older tape backup units are 8-bit devices, consult the user's guide and set the negotiation rate accordingly (typically disabled for 8-bit devices).

  • IBM Tape Autoloaders are Multi-LUN devices. New SCSI controllers have a selection to disable Multi-LUN Support, located under "Advanced Configuration Options". Multi-LUN Support must be enabled for the autoloader, whether the BIOS is enabled or disabled.

  • Hard Drives that do not have AUTO START jumpers enabled must have the SCSI BIOS send a "Start Unit Command". This is configured in the SCSISelect utility by selecting "Configure / View Host Adapter Settings", "SCSI Device Configuration", and setting the "Send Start Unit Command" to "yes" under the appropriate SCSI ID. (It is recommended to let the Adaptec controller start the units, however the boot device may be jumpered for Autostart. If the Autostart jumper is on a drive, you can still set to send Start Unit Command. Multiple drives should not be set to Autostart, as this is a drain on the power supply when they all try to start at once.)

  • Tape Drives do not use a spin-up jumper, or the Start Unit Command. Remember that all connectors on a some SCSI controllers are not multichannel. ID's 0-6 only are available for devices attached to any ribbon, internal or external, on these single channel controllers, and ID's will conflict between chains on the same controller. SCSI controllers with multi-channel capability will define the multiple channels as part of the SCSI Select menu. Other systems may have more than one embedded controller, and will define this in the SCSISelect utility.


Intermittent problems and SCSI timeout errors

  • Make sure the unit's firmware and drivers are at the latest levels.

  • Make sure the data being backed up is compressed only once.

  • Make sure the tape drive is setup correctly in the SCSI BIOS per "SCSI controller considerations" (above).

  • Use 16-bit active termination if only 8-bit devices (e.g. CD-ROM drives, or tape backup units) are attached to 16-bit Wide SCSI chains.

  • Check host adapter termination.
