Problem

For IBM servers and IntelliStation, the tape drive is seen during the POST/SCSI scan, but not by the operating system.

Resolving The Problem

Symptom
Tape drive is seen, detected, and listed properly by the POST/Startup SCSI scan, but it is not recognized within the operating system.

Affected configuration
Any SCSI tape drive attached to any IBM system.

Solution
If your tape drive is seen during the POST/SCSI scan, but not in the operating system, do the following:
  1. Check the driver for the SCSI controller that the tape drive is attached to. If this driver is not present, load the driver posted on the IBM Personal Systems Support Web site for your SCSI controller. Ensure that the driver loaded is the correct driver.
  2. After confirming that the correct SCSI driver is loaded, the operating system should detect the tape device, but will likely need a driver for it. Load the correct driver for the tape drive by doing one of the following:
    1. Go to the IBM Support Site, download and install the appropiate driver for your tape device.
    2. Install a tape backup software package, which will automatically load the correct driver.
      Note: Veritas Backup Exec requires that the installer check the "Load Tape Drivers" box during install to load a tape device driver.
  3. If the driver still does not seem to load after several attempts, ensure that you do not have a management software package installed that could interfere with the install process. If management software is installed, uninstall this software and try to load the tape driver again.
  4. If the tape drive is still not recognized, contact an IBM support technician at your local IBM Support Center.
