Learn how to remove GX adapters from the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C,
or 8205-E6D systems with
the power turned off.
If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to remove an adapter.
For instructions, see Removing
a part by using the Hardware Management Console.
If your
system is not managed by an HMC,
complete the following steps to remove an adapter:
- Complete the prerequisite tasks.
For instructions, see Before
you begin.
Note: Do
not disconnect the power cords at this time.
- Inspect the rear of the unit to determine if whether the
system is using the cable management arm or if the cables have adequate
length and sufficient mobility to place this unit into the service
position.
- Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping
the system or logical partition.
- For a rack-mounted system, place
the system into the service position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C,
or 8205-E6D system in the
service position.
- Remove the service access
cover:
- For instructions to remove the service access cover from a rack-mounted
system, see Removing the service access cover from a rack-mounted 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C,
or 8205-E6D system.
- For instructions to remove the service access cover from a stand-alone
system, see Removing the service access cover from a stand-alone 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D,
or 8205-E6B system.
- Identify the failing part. For instructions,
see Identifying
a part.
- Identify the part to replace, by
using one of the following methods:
- Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to
help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying
a part.
- Use the service label located on the underside of the service
access cover.
The following figure shows the LEDs
(A) associated
with the GX adapters.

- Disconnect and label any necessary cables with the proper
connection information. The labels make it easier to reconnect
the cables after you replace the adapter.
- If you are not replacing the adapter, remove any mechanical
retaining brackets.
- Disconnect the power source from
the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting
the power cords.
Note: This system is equipped with a second power supply.
Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source
to the system has been disconnected.

or
- Attach the wrist strap.
Attention: - Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware
to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
- When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures.
A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease
your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical
equipment.
- If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product
from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an
unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
- With the system in the service position, remove the existing
adapter assembly as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3. Unlock the latch
above the adapter slot (A) by pulling the latch
toward the rear of the system.
- Remove the existing adapter assembly by unlocking the latches (B) on
the adapter. Evenly pull up the latches into the open position, and
lift the adapter out of the system.

- If you are not replacing the adapter or installing a new
adapter, place a filler panel in the slot. Seal the expansion slot
by using an expansion slot cover.
