Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD I/O backplane

Learn about removing the I/O backplane from the server.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for removing the I/O backplane from the server. For instructions, see Removing a part by using the HMC.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to remove the I/O backplane:

  1. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  2. Complete one of the following steps, as applicable:
    1. If you are removing the I/O backplane for a system upgrade or as part of another procedure, continue with step 3.
    2. If you are removing the I/O backplane because of a system failure, use the service action log to help identify the failing part. For instructions, see Identifying a failing part.
  3. Stop the system or logical partition. For instructions, see Stopping a system or logical partition.
  4. Disconnect the power source from the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords.
    Note: This system has a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

  5. Disconnect all PCI adapters and remove them from the adapter cassettes. For instructions, see Removing a PCI adapter from a cassette.
  6. Remove the integrated multifunction card. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD integrated multifunction card with the power off.
  7. Remove the service processor card. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD service processor card with the system power turned off.
  8. Remove the power supplies to the system. For instructions, see moving the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD power supply with the power turned off.
  9. Remove the vital product data (VPD) card. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD vital product data card.
  10. Remove the serial-attached SCSI (SAS) port. For instructions, see Removing the external SAS port from the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  11. Remove the I/O backplane by completing the following steps:
    1. Rotate the handles (A) outward in the direction shown in the following figure as far as they can go.
    2. Grasp the sides of the I/O backplane and slide it out of the enclosure.

  12. Complete one of the following steps:
    1. If you removed the I/O backplane as a part of another procedure, continue with that procedure.
    2. If you want to replace the I/O backplane or to install a new I/O backplane, see Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD I/O backplane.
