Configuring an investment project

You can use the Asset investment optimizer page to generate optimized investments for your assets. In an investment project, you can specify investment strategies, such as maintain risk or stay in budget, and then you can run analysis on each strategy. The analysis considers replacement data, which is either asset-specific or from a replacement plan template, and work orders, service requests, scoring, and model results to generate an optimized schedule and set of costs for meeting the objective of that strategy. You can compare analysis results for different strategies and then export the results.

Ensure that asset investment optimization is enabled. For more information, see Deploying Maximo® Health and Predict - Utilities.

For assets that you will add to a project, ensure that assets are not decommissioned and that the following data is available for the assets:

  • Effective age score or installation date. To determine which assets are missing an installation date, you can review the Missing installation date work queue.
  • Criticality score. To determine which assets are missing a criticality score, you can review the Missing criticality score work queue.
  • End of life curve model. To configure the model, contact your data scientist.
  • Associated asset type. To add a type, specify the type in the source record for the asset. For example, open the asset and in the Actions menu, click Open source record.

A replacement plan template is also required for each asset type in the project. You can specify the template before you create the project or on the Create project page.

Depending on how your application administrator configured the integration between Maximo Health and Predict - Utilities and source EAM system, it might take a few minutes for Maximo Health and Predict - Utilities to show the data after it is specified or updated. If the source EAM system is not IBM® Maximo Manage, you can more quickly synchronize data by enabling event listeners for data that is related to asset investment optimization, such as assets, locations, work orders, and inspections.

  1. Create a project.
    1. On the Assets page, choose assets for the project.
      • To add all assets in the current view, click the Create project icon.
      • To add specific assets, select the check boxes for those assets and then click Create investment project.
    2. In the Name field, specify a name for the project,
    3. In the Summary field, summarize the project.
    4. In the Duration in years field, specify the duration of the project in years.
    5. In the Target start quarter field, specify the target quarter for the project to start.
    6. In the Target start year field, specify the target year for the project to start.
    7. In the Replacement plan templates section, specify templates for each listed asset type. To create a template, click Create template. To edit a template, click the asset type.
    8. Click Create.
  2. Create an investment strategy. A default strategy is automatically added to each new project. Strategies cannot be edited after they are created, but you can delete strategies if more than one strategy exists. To create a new strategy, complete the following steps:
    1. In the Investment strategies section, click the plus icon.
    2. In the Strategy field, select the type of strategy that you want to create.
    3. Specify any additional information about the strategy. For example, if you choose the stay in budget strategy, you can specify the total budget for the project, operating expenses (OPEX), and capital expenses (CAPEX). If you choose the reduce risk strategy, you can specify the targeted risk score.
    4. Optional: Enable the Use available asset-specific replacement data toggle. When the toggle is enabled, any available asset-specific replacement plan data is used instead of the data in the asset type replacement plan template.
    5. Click Create.
  3. Click Run analysis. If an asset does not require any scheduling changes or replacement to meet the objective of the strategy, the asset is excluded from the analysis. Assets that are missing the required data are also excluded from the analysis.
You can review the results of the analysis in a report or in a table.
For more information about troubleshooting analysis issues or other asset investment optimization features, review the Troubleshooting asset investment optimization in Maximo Health and Predict - Utilities article on IBM Support.
You can click Compare strategies to compare the results of up to three strategies side by side. You can click Export to export the results of a strategy to a .csv file. To track which strategy will be implemented, from the three-dot menu for the strategy, click Mark as current.

On the Assets page, you can add more assets to a project by using the following options:

  • To add all assets in the current view, click the plus icon.
  • To add specific assets, select the check boxes for those assets and then click Add to investment project.

Adding assets to a project or changing asset data, project details, or replacement plan templates can invalidate analysis results. A message appears in the project when a strategy's analysis must be run again.
