The configuration file that you create to install Office on Windows devices includes a
series of customizable download, installation, and removal settings.
About this task
This procedure contains common settings that you configure for the Office XML configuration file.
Use the Microsoft Office Customization Tool to generate the Office XML configuration file that
allows you to deploy Office to devices.
Procedure

Go to the Microsoft Office Customization Tool at https://config.office.com/. For more information about the Office Customization Tool, see the
Microsoft site at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployOffice/overview-of-the-office-customization-tool-for-click-to-run.

Configure Deployment settings as needed.
You can choose the Import option to use an existing XML configuration
file on the device or the Reset option to clear all existing configurations
on the device and then start building the configuration file from the beginning.

Select Products and releases.

Select the architecture that you want to deploy such as 32-bit or 64-bit. |

- Select the Office products that you want to install such as Office 365 ProPlus, Office 365
Business, Office Professional Plus 2019 - Volume License, or Office Standard 2019 - Volume
License.
- For the Visio version, select the Visio product volume license. For example, valid values for
the Visio volume licensed versions are Visio Standard 2016 Volume License, Visio Professional 2016
Volume License, Visio Standard 2019 Volume License, or Visio Professional 2019 Volume License.
- For the Project version, select the Project product volume license. For example, valid values
for the Project volume license are Project Online Desktop Client, Project Standard 2016 Volume
License, Project Professional 2016 Volume License, Project Standard 2019 Volume License, or Project
Professional 2019 Volume License.
- Choose additional products that you want to deploy such as a language pack or Office 365 Access
Runtime.
- By default, all apps that are included in the Office Suite that you selected are installed. You
can include or exclude some apps from deployment such as Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or
Publisher.

Update channel |
Select the update channel that you want to use to install or receive updates. The update
channel determines how frequently you update your Windows
devices with new Office features.
- Select the monthly or the semi-annual channel to update features on the device.
- Select the version of the update channel that you want to deploy on devices

Click Next, and then configure the following

Select any additional languages (from language packs) that you want to deploy on devices,
and then choose whether to include the full language pack, a partial language pack, or proofing

Where do you want to deploy Office from? |
Select the location of the Office installation files that you want to deploy. If you do
not specify the source path for the Office Customization Tool, the deployment tool looks for the
installation files in the folder that the Office Customization Tool is located in. If the deployment
tool cannot find the Office installation files, the tool uses the Office Content Delivery Network
(CDN) to retrieve the installation files.
Choose one of the following deployment options:
- Office content delivery network (CDN): Downloads and installs Office
directly from the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN). This setting depends on your internet
connection and available network bandwidth.
- Local source: Deploys Office from a source path such as network, local,
or an HTTP path. If needed, select the Office content delivery network (CDN)
for missing languages.

Configuration manager |
Manages the following installation configuration settings:
- Show installation to user: Enable this setting to show the Office
configuration installation to the user or disable to install the Office configuration silently
without notifying the user.
- Pin icons to Taskbar: Pin or unpin icons to the taskbar.
- Logging: Specify whether to show log files to the user.
- Save log file to: The network, local, or HTTP path where you want to save
the log file.

Click Next, and then configure the following Update and

Where do you want to deploy updates from? |
The location where you want to deploy updates from for the Office configuration. The
default setting is to receive updates directly from the Office content delivery network (CDN) on the
internet. This is the suggested option that requires the least amount effort from the
administrator.
Note: To update computers that are not connected to the internet, you
can specify Office to receive updates from a shared folder on your local network. You must download
the updates from the Office CDN and copy those updates to the shared folder.
- Office content delivery network (CDN): Download and install Office
updates directly from the Office content delivery network (CDN).
- Local source: Deploy Office updates from a source path such as network,
local, or an HTTP path.
- Configuration manager: Use settings that are configured in the
installation options.

Check for Office updates and install the updates according to the configuration manager
settings. |

Uninstall any MSI versions of Office, including Visio and

Allows the sharing of computers on the Windows 10+
device. If this setting is enabled, choose whether to allow licensing token roaming and then enter

Click Next, and then configure the following

- Optional:
Click Next, and then configure the Application
preferences. Choose from the apps that are listed in Show only to
set any preferences for installing or uninstalling apps from devices.

Click Finish. Review the configuration settings and, if needed, update
the settings.

Click Export to export the configuration to an XML file.

Accept the terms of the license agreement, enter a meaningful configuration file name, and then
click Export.
Results
The Office XML configuration file is saved on your Windows 10+ device.
