Northwestern State University develops future IBM i talent with AI skills
Overview Northwestern State University (NSU) is a public university located in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Established in 1884 as the Louisiana State Normal School, it originally served as a teacher training institution. In 1970, it achieved official university status, reflecting expanded academic offerings. NSU has been recognized for its educational excellence, particularly in its Computer Information Systems program, which is considered one of the best in the nation. Among its degree offerings in this program are a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems (with concentrations in Application Development, Information Systems Management, and Networking and Cyber Security) and a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems. Alumni advocacy in action Monty Chicola is a distinguished alumni of Northwestern State University and one of the first to earn a Computer Information Systems degree from the school. He is also founder of Real Vision Software, an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) and IBM Business Partner that provides IBM i solutions such as document management, report management, forms management, and data distribution tools that incorporate AI capabilities for clients. Monty is a passionate advocate for IBM i and IBM® Power®, and wanted to do his part to develop the next generation of professionals working on the platform. He contacted the university to set up a partnership to develop and teach a program with IBM i curriculum, focusing on skills that are in high demand in the workforce.

"We are thrilled to partner with IBM to bring cutting-edge technology education to our students. The launch of our first course using the IBM curriculum, with a focus on RPG IV Programming and artificial intelligence, marks a significant milestone for Northwestern State University and the state of Louisiana. This collaboration not only enhances our curriculum but also positions our students to be leaders in the rapidly evolving tech industry. We look forward to expanding this partnership and continuing to offer innovative educational opportunities that prepare our graduates for the future."

Partnering for success

In the 2024-2025 academic year, Northwestern State University will launch the first course with an IBM i curriculum, focusing on RPG IV programming and incorporating AI concepts. This course is expected to become a staple in its curriculum, with plans to expand into different areas such as other IBM software and cloud technologies.

Northwestern State University will have access to the resources they need to successfully teach the program and train future IBM i talent through the Power Skills Academy. The Power Skills Academy equips educators like NSU and other eligible academic institutions with free access to courses and technology they need to develop in-demand skills.

A win for students and employers

This course is designed to attract traditional students preparing and studying for careers, but also non-traditional students who are already employed in a technology-based job, looking to change careers, or re-enter the workforce after an extended absence. Students will both enhance and add to their skills with the curriculum covered in the program.

Northwestern State University believes integrating real-world technologies such as IBM i and Power into classroom learning better prepares students for the workforce, and this new program is another example of that.
