When WebSphere Application Server V6.1 or V7.0 is installed on AIX, the "lppchk" command might print warning messages related to filesets such as WSBAA61

Troubleshooting

Problem

After installing WebSphere Application Server V6.1 or V7.0 on AIX, the AIX command "lppchk" might produce warning messages about certain filesets. The warning message states "lppchk: The following filesets need to be installed or corrected to bring the system to a consistent state". Each of the filesets producing the warning is related to the WebSphere Application Server product, such as WSBAA61 or WSPAA61.

Symptom

Once WebSphere Application Server V6.1 or V7.0 is installed on an AIX system, certain filesets are registered in the AIX ODM. As part of regular system checks, an AIX system administrator might run the "lppchk" command. The "lppchk" command might print warning messages regarding filesets related to the WebSphere Application Server product.

The warning message is similar to the following example:

lppchk:  The following filesets need to be installed or corrected to bring the system to a consistent state

A list of filesets follows the warning. Each fileset is directly related to the WebSphere Application Server V6.1 or V7.0 product. The following filesets could potentially be listed by the warning message:

WSBAA61
WSBAA61LicensingComponent
WSPAA61
WSPAA61LicensingComponent
WSBAA70
WSBAA70LicensingComponent
WSPAA70
WSPAA70LicensingComponent

The functionality of WebSphere Application Server is not impacted by the warning messages produced by the "lppchk" command.

Cause

After successfully installing WebSphere Application Server V6.1 or V7.0 on AIX, the WebSphere Application Server product registers some filesets. These filesets do not contain any actual product files, and they only exist for backward compatibility with software that must interact with AIX filesets. An AIX system administrator might notice that these informational filesets are reported as being inconsistent with what the "lppchk" command expects. This is related to the fact that the filesets are informational, and are controlled by the WebSphere installer and not controlled by the standard AIX "geninstall" or "installp" facility.

Resolving The Problem

Use the manual complete cleanup script for WebSphere Application Server on AIX, offered in technote 1198862. The cleanup script removes the entries from the AIX ODM which cause the lppchk utility to display errors.

The recommended technote 1198862 is quite large, because there are many different problems which can be solved by using those cleanup scripts. In this case, when you are interested in resolving the errors displayed by the lppchk command, you only need to complete a small portion of that technote. As instructed in the technote, download the script named "manual_WebSphere_ODM_wipe.sh". Then, follow steps 1-8 under the "Resolving the problem" header. (Be sure to follow the suggestion to run the script normally, then run the script again with the "-a" parameter.)

The rest of the technote has "optional" information explaining more about the script, and covers solutions for other kinds of problems. You do not need to use the other instructions in that technote if you are only resolving the errors from the lppchk command.
