Question & Answer

Question

What's behind the "Unable to open Metafile <*.hdr>" messages seen in the WAS agent logs?

Answer

Those "Unable to open Metafile <*.hdr>" messages comes from History configuration.  By default, it looks in those *.hdr files to see if you've got any history configuration set for those attributes.
To check this, simply login to your TEPS, and then go to Edit / History Configuration and a small window pops up.  Select ITCAM for WebSphere in the list, on the right side you'll see the table with the Group names. If you see a little blue man icon next to the attribute, then history is being collected for that group attribute.   When you collect history for that group attribute, it'll create short-term history files  on the agent in the /opt/IBM/ITM/ls3263/yn/hist/ dir.     If the *.hdr files don't exist (b'cos no history has been collected), then you'll see this "error" message.
Its not really an error, just a message indicating that its looking for history collection and no history (for whatever reason, maybe there's no data to collect history on) is available..  if that's the case, you'll see these harmless messages with 0 error code.  They are not related to the Managing Server (if you use it) at all.  They're only seen on the WebSphere agent by default, with 0 error return code.  You can safely ignore these messages.  No harm done there.  All good.
