Using the Technology Preview of Automatic View Support on Linux

Question & Answer

Question

Can I use automatic views on Linux?

Answer

ClearCase® 9.0.1.2 and later contains a technology preview of automatic view support on Linux (x86 and x86_64 hardware only). This technology preview does not have any specific installation support or documentation (other than this technote). The parts necessary to run automatic views are installed as part of a full ClearCase® installation, but the automatic view support is not enabled as part of the installation.

In order to enable the automatic view support after a successful installation of full ClearCase®, as the root user, do the following steps. These steps can be done at any time after the installation, and, until they are done, ClearCase® will function as it always has with dynamic, snapshot, and web views.

1. /opt/rational/clearcase/etc/clearcase stop
2. mkdir /rview
3. chmod 755 /rview
4. touch /var/adm/rational/clearcase/ok_mvfs_auview_tag
5. /opt/rational/clearcase/etc/clearcase start

To disable automatic view support, as the root user, do the following steps:

1. /opt/rational/clearcase/etc/clearcase stop
2. rmdir /rview
3. rm /var/adm/rational/clearcase/ok_mvfs_auview_tag
4. /opt/rational/clearcase/etc/clearcase start

Automatic views on Linux behave just like automatic views on Windows (which is available since ClearCase® version 8.0.1.7). The main user visible difference is that automatic views on Linux appear under /rview (similar to dynamic views under /view), whereas on Windows they appear under R: (similar to dynamic views under M:). Tools such as rcleartool and ClearTeam Explorer (CTE) operate the same on Linux as they do on Windows. Some descriptions of automatic views on Windows can be found in the ClearCase® documentation; see the following "Related Information" section.
