Example: The console redirection must be set to Directed and not Shared for remote console sessions to work with Serial over LAN (SoL).

Configuring the Remote Console Redirection is of primary importance and the information can be located on pages 12 and 13 of the guide referenced above.
Additional Information
Once the System x server BIOS has been correctly configured, the IPMItool can be used with normal SoL commands to establish the communication to the remote system.
