Question & Answer
Question
How can data encryption be used with IBM® Rational® ClearCase and ClearQuest MultiSite®?
Answer
MultiSite has no built in packet encryption.
If there is a concern for sending MultiSite packets through an unsecured network, the packets will have to be encrypted with a 3rd party tool before being shipped.
The packet must then be decrypted prior to being imported.
Examples:
- Encrypt the MultiSite data packet(s) and create shipping order file manually:
Run the mkreplica or syncreplica with the -out switch to create the packet(s).
ClearCase Example:
multitool syncreplica –export –out c:\tmp\boston_hub_packet1
boston_hub@\dev
ClearQuest Example:
multiutil syncreplica -export -clan telecomm -site boston_hub
-family SAMPL -user susan -p passwd -out C:\cqms\sanfran_hub_sync.xml sanfran_hub
The packet(s) can then be encrypted and the mkorder command could be used to create a shipping order file that could be processed by the MultiSite shipping server to ship the packet(s).
Run the mkreplica or syncreplica with the -ship switch to create the packet(s) and shipping order.
- ClearCase Example:
multitool syncreplica –export –ship boston_hub@\dev
ClearQuest Example:
multiutil syncreplica -export -clan telecomm -site boston_hub
-family DEV -user susan -p passwd -maxsize 500mb -workdir c:\work
-ship -sclass cq_default sanfran_hub
- This creates the packet(s) and the associated shipping order, but doesn't invoke the shipping server to send the packet(s).
The packet(s) can then be encrypted.
If the resulting encrypted packet is created with the same name as the original the original shipping order can be used to send the file. Care must be taken that the shipping server is not invoked before the packet is encrypted because the packet will be shipped un-encrypted.
Refer to the MultiSite Administrator's Guide on the topics of Packet transportation methods and configuration for ClearCase or ClearQuest and mkorder for ClearCase or ClearQuest for more details regarding alternate transport methods, using store-and-forward through a firewall and creating shipping order files.
