Use Failure Recovery mode with Update Installer 7.0.0.x on WebSphere Application Server 6.0.2.x updates

Troubleshooting

Problem

After a failed attempt to apply an ifix or fixpack to WebSphere Application Server v6.0.2.x with Update Installer 7.0.x. You are not able to install or uninstall the maintenance and the updateinstaller fails in recovery mode.

Resolving The Problem

On WebSphere version 6.0.2.x if we have interim fix or fixpack installation failure. The updateinstaller is in a state where it is not able to install or uninstall the maintenance and recovery mode is also failing, then we can use the recovery mode parameter with Update Installer 7.0.0.x

Please run the following command under UPDI_HOME directory.
     ./java/jre/bin/java -DinFailureRecoveryMode=true -cp update.jar run

The UPDI_HOME is the root directory where Update Installer is installed.

The Update Installer will then launch in a mode called, failover status. The update installer will guide you through the failover process. When the system is successfully "failovered", quit the Update Installer.

Now your system should be in a clean status. Relaunch the Update Installer normally to continue your install of the ifix / fixpack.

If doing silent update, please add options for silent install to the command above.

Please note this option is only available for Update Installer 7.0.x and to be used only on WebSphere Application Server 6.0.x. With respect to WebSphere Application Server 7.0.x and 6.1.0.x we should not see the issue.
