Use Ctrl-Backspace instead of plain Backspace to go back one space in runmqsc (remote connection)

Troubleshooting

Problem

You are working with a telnet or ssh remote connection to a UNIX server that has WebSphere MQ queue managers. You start the MQ administration utility "runmqsc", enter a command, and make a typographical error. You try to correct the error by pressing the Backspace key and instead of going back one space as you expect, the following appears in the screen for each time that you press the backspace: ^H.

Symptom

Example: You want to enter the following command:
display qlocal
but you enter:
disppl
and you realize that it is misspelled. You want to erase the last 2 letters, so you press the Backspace key 2 times. Instead of deleting the last 2 letters, you see additional characters:
disppl^H^H

This is especially frustrating when you have entered a long command and then you realize that you made a typographical error.

Cause

This is an issue with the hardware/software interaction.

Resolving The Problem

If the Backspace key does not work, then use the following combination of keys:

Ctrl + Backspace

That is, press the Ctrl key and hold it down, and press the Backspace key at the same time.
