Upgrading from WebSphere Application Server Liberty profile Version 8.5.5.2 to a different edition fails

Problem

If your configuration of WebSphere Application Server Liberty profile Version 8.5.5.2 has user features installed, upgrading to a different edition fails. For example, upgrading the Liberty profile on WebSphere Application Server edition to WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment edition fails. Note: This problem only occurs with user features; core features do not have this problem.

Symptom

The edition upgrade fails with an error similar to the following sample message:

CWWKF1216I: The following features already exist: [com.ibm.websphere.appserver.portlet-2.0, com.ibm.websphere.appserver.portletserving-2.0, com.ibm.websphere.appserver.webCacheMonitor-1.0].

Resolving The Problem

Choose from the following options to resolve this problem:

  • If this failure occurs during an edition upgrade, then ignore the failure. IBM Installation Manager will roll back the Liberty profile instance to the previous edition. Next, upgrade the Liberty profile without selecting the user features. After the edition upgrade is complete, you can use the feature manager to install the user features.
  • During an edition upgrade do not select the user features. Instead, upgrade the Liberty profile without selecting the user features. After the edition upgrade is complete, you can use the feature manager to install the user features.
  • This problem is fixed in Version 8.5.5.4. Update to Version 8.5.5.4 or later to resolve this problem.
