RETAIN tip: H1743

Symptoms
  • Upgrading from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 fails when using the AMD Ethernet driver v2.08.
  • In the device manager, the icon for the AMD Fault Tolerance PCI Adapter has a red "X" on it.
  • If you uninstall the Windows NT 4.0 driver and install the Windows 2000 driver, the installation (upgrade) fails.

Note: You can install Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or Service Pack 6 before doing the upgrade. After the upgrade, the Ethernet adapter is disabled and the system cannot see the network.

Affected configurations

The system is any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:

  • a Netfinity 5600 server, type 8664, any model
  • a Netfinity 5500-M20 server, type 8662, any model
  • a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, type 8661, any model
  • a Netfinity 5500 server, type 8660, any model
  • a Netfinity 5000 server, type 8659, any model
The following operating system is affected:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
Solution

Before upgrading to Windows 2000:

  1. Uninstall the AMD Ethernet driver.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Reinstall the Ethernet driver from the Windows NT 4.0 CD (version 3.11).
  4. You can then proceed with the Windows 2000 upgrade.
Additional information

Windows 2000 will only upgrade the native Windows NT4.0 AMD Ethernet driver. If a more current Windows NT 4 driver is installed, Windows 2000 will attempt to use it instead of the new Windows 2000 specific AMD driver, causing a failure.
