Determining your firmware level

Please refer to the Server Firmware and HMC Code Wizard page for information on how to determine what level of firmware is currently on the system and how to upgrade it properly.

7.4 Updates and PTFs

Required PTFs for Upgrading to IBM i 7.4

*** Action required to prevent possible SS1 option 1 install failure

Actions needed before upgrading to 7.4 to avoid an 5770SS1 Option 1 install failure during the upgrade to 7.4 if you are upgrading from 7.2:

  1. If SI64507 is applied, no further action is needed.
  2. If SI64507 is not applied, RNMOBJ OBJ(QSYS2/SYSTR00001) OBJTYPE(*FILE) NEWOBJ(SYSTRIGGER)

7.3 Updates and PTFs

*** Attention Customers who have installed 7.2 database group ptf SF99702 level 11 or applied individual ptfs SI60308 or SI60333.

Following the install of R720 database group ptf SF99702 level 11 or apply of individual ptf SI60308 or ptf SI60333, a flag in SQL views is incorrectly set to indicate the view contains a system-time period.   This can cause a problem during the install of R730 5770SS1 Option 1 when re-creating views built on SQL system catalogs.

To prevent this R730 installation failure, apply R720 PTF SI60586 which includes a program (QQQFIXVW) to correct views built on SQL system catalogs.

The best practice is to run this program "CALL QSYS/QQQFIXVW" in restricted state before your upgrade to R730.  This program will correct all views built on SQL system catalogs and prevent a possible R730 upgrade failure.

*** Attention Customers who have a large number of libraries

When upgrading to IBM i 7.3, the install of R730 5770SS1 Option *BASE will fail if you are installing from XPF resave AP16026 (GA resave) and there are more than 32,767 libraries in the system ASP.

To prevent this R730 installation failure when installing from XPF resave AP16026, first determine the number of libraries that are on the system before upgrading to R730.  Run the following commands to determine the number of libraries:

  • SETASPGRP *NONE  (Ensures no attached iASPS)
  • DSPOBJD OBJ(QSYS/*ALL) OBJTYPE(*LIB) OUTPUT(*OUTFILE) OUTFILE(QGPL/LIBS)
  • RUNQRY QRY(*NONE) QRYFILE((QGPL/LIBS)) OUTTYPE(*DISPLAY) OUTFORM(*SUMMARY)

this returns a report:

Line   ....+....1....+
000001 FINAL TOTALS
000002 COUNT 1,619
****** ********  End of report  ********

This system has 1,619 libraries (*LIB objects).

There are two alternatives to prevent this R730 installation failure:

  • If the number of libraries is more than 32,767, then save and delete some libraries before upgrading to R730.  The number of libraries needs to be under 32,767 before upgrading the system to R730.
  • Load/apply PTF SI66313 onto a system already installed with 7.3 and create your own distribution media (https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzai4/rzai4distsw.htm).  Install 7.3 from your distribution media.

*** Action required to prevent possible SS1 option 1 install failure

Actions needed before upgrading to 7.3 to avoid an 5770SS1 Option 1 install failure during the upgrade to 7.3

  • If you are upgrading from 7.1
  1. If SI65709 is applied, no further action is needed.
  2. If SI65709 is not applied, RNMOBJ OBJ(QSYS2/SYSTR00001) OBJTYPE(*FILE) NEWOBJ(SYSTRIGGER)
  • If you are upgrading from 7.2
  1. If SI64507 is applied, no further action is needed.
  2. If SI64507 is not applied, RNMOBJ OBJ(QSYS2/SYSTR00001) OBJTYPE(*FILE) NEWOBJ(SYSTRIGGER)

*** Possible timing failure during an install

A timing situation has been seen a couple of times during an upgrade where the install of LPPs will fail with the following message:

CPF3D88 - Job queue QLPINSTALL in QSYS not found or in use.

To avoid this error when installing from re-distribution media, please ensure PTF SI65392 is loaded/applied before creating the re-distribution media.

If you see this error when installing from IBM media, just load/apply PTF SI65392 before using GO LICPGM to install LPPs.

7.2 Updates and PTFs

Actions needed before upgrading to 7.2 to avoid an 5770SS1 Option 1 install failure during the upgrade to 7.2 if you are upgrading from 7.1

  1. If SI65709 is applied, no further action is needed.
  2. If SI65709 is not applied, RNMOBJ OBJ(QSYS2/SYSTR00001) OBJTYPE(*FILE) NEWOBJ(SYSTRIGGER)
