Problem

Under Windows 2003 64 bit for Itanium, after inserting a CD with auto-run capability, the CD spins up and within a minute the system stops responding to the mouse and keyboard (system freeze).

Symptom

Under Microsoft Windows 2003 64 bit for Itanium, after inserting a CD with auto-run capability, the CD spins up and within a minute the system stops responding to the mouse and keyboard (system freeze).

Within another minute, the system reboots. The system event log shows an NMI occurred to cause the reboot.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer systems:

  • IBM eServer xSeries 455, type 8855, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 450, type 8688, any model

The following operating systems are affected:

  • Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, for 64-Bit Itanium-based Systems
  • Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition, for 64-Bit Itanium-based Systems

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Please see the compatibility page for more information.

Solution

None.

Workaround

When fully extending the DVD/CDRW drive tray, take precautions not to pull the DVD/CDRW drive assembly out beyond its mechanical stops.

Additional information

When the DVD/CDRW drive tray is ejected by the Operating System, it may be necessary to pull the tray out an additional distance to remove and/or replace the CD.

In some cases, if the tray is pulled fully out, the drive may move approximately 1/16" off its mechanical stop which is sufficient to lose electrical connection with the backplane.

When the tray is reinserted, the DVD/CDRW drive is reconnected to the backplane, and if the CD is auto-run, data will begin transmitting across the bus.

Because there is no Plug-and-Play capability, the system times out trying to communicate with the DVD/CDRW drive, an NMI is generated, the system freezes, and reboots.
