Sun StorageTek VTL Plus
Sun StorageTek VTL Prime
1. Sun StorageTek VTL Plus and Sun StorageTek VTL Prime are disk based Virtual Tape Libraries. The VTLs can emulate various StorageTek L-Series libraries. However, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager supports the VTLs only in native mode with device identification "SUN VTL".
2. All models of VTL Plus and VTL Prime are supported including
- VTL 1140/ 2540/3540 for VTL Plus (1.0)
- VTL 1200/1202/2600/3600 for VTL Plus 2.0
- VTL 4320C/4329C/4365C for VTL Prime 1.x
- VTL 4302R/4305R/4310R for VTL Prime 1.x
3. The following drive emulation is supported on any VTL Plus and VTL Prime model as long as it is supported by Sun.
- IBM Ultrium-TD2 and HP Ultrium 460 (LTO-2)
- IBM Ultrium-TD3 and HP Ultrium 960 (LTO-3)
- IBM Ultrium-TD4 and HP Ultrium 1840 (LTO-4)
- 9840B and 9840C
- 9840D
- 9940B
- T10000A
- T10000B
- SDLT 600
- DLT-S4
4. Barcodes are supported.
5. Device identifications and firmware levels used during validation
- VTL Plus validated with TSM 5.3.6
Library ID : SUN VTL --- Firmware : 3.15
Drive ID : STK T10000A --- Firmware : 127
Drive ID : HP Ultrium 3-SCSI --- Firmware : G27D
- VTL Plus validated with TSM 5.4.1
Library ID : SUN VTL --- Firmware : 3.15
Drive ID : STK T10000A --- Firmware : 127
- VTL Plus validated with TSM 6.1.3
Sun StorageTek Virtual Tape Library Server V5.10
Library ID : STK L700 --- Firmware : 3.05
Drive ID : STK T10000B --- Firmware : 127
- VTL Plus 2.0 validated with TSM 5.5.1
Library ID : SUN VTL --- Firmware : 3.15
Drive ID : HP Ultrium 4-SCSI --- Firmware : H16D
Drive ID : IBM Ultrium-TD4 -- Firmware : 4c17
Drive ID : STK 9840D -- Firmware : 1.35.505
- VTL Prime validated with TSM 5.5.1
Library ID : SUN VTL --- Firmware : 3.15
Drive ID : HP Ultrium 4-SCSI --- Firmware : H16D
6. ELEMent=AUTODetect in the DEFINE/UPDATE DRIVE command is supported.
7. Because there is no physical entry/exit port, the CHECKIN LIBVOLUME command with SEARCH=BULK and the CHECKOUT LIBVOLUME command with REMOVE=BULK are not supported.
8. Mixed media is not supported on Sun StorageTek VTL Plus and VTL Prime.
9. The capacity of each volume is assigned by the VTL administrator when the volume is created and may be different from the standard capacity of the media.
10. TSM will attempt to turn on data compression (through MODE SELECT) when the DEVCLASS format is set to enable compression. However, the VTLs will not compress data when writing data to the virtual tape. The VTLs perform compression as an internal function and is selectable as an internal option to the VTLs.
11. The VTLs are no longer supported with Tivoli Storage Manager Server version 7.1 and later.
Library and drive may require different minimum TSM levels. Therefore, ensure that both library and drive hardware are supported. See "Supported Devices for AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Windows" or "Supported Devices for Linux" for minimum supported version levels and platforms for these devices.
More information regarding removable media is available in the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator's Guide, which can be found in Tivoli Storage Manager Information Centers.
