Submitted Job Tracker - Job QMRDBJNFY

Question & Answer

Question

What is the function of job QMRDBJNFY running in QSYSWRK.

Answer

The Submitted Job Tracker is an IBM® i work management feature that tracks the lifecycle of submitted jobs for a user specified set of job queues.
The job QMRDBJNFY, the AJE entry QMRDBJNFY in the subsystem QSYSWRK and the log files in the directory /QIBM/UserData/OS400/SUBMITTEDJOBTRACKER are part of a new function Submitted Job Tracker announced on the latest TR updates for R740 and R750:
  • IBM i 7.5 Technology Refresh 1
  • IBM i 7.4 Technology Refresh 7
Because the Submitted Job Tracker function can be use outside of Db2Mirror is installed on all Systems that install the TR.
Submitted Job Tracker is a work management feature of the IBM i operating system and can be used without Db2 Mirror. The following link explains the Job and the fact that it can be used outside DB2Mirror:
Submitted Job Tracker job:
Handles events and processes notifications from job notification exit points. Additional information can be found here:  Submitted Job Tracker.
Job start:
  • Starts with a QSYSWRK subsystem Autostart entry.
  • Can also be started by calling a program by using the following CL command:
    • CALL PGM(QSYS/QMRDBJNFYS)
Job end:
  • Ends when the QSYSWRK subsystem is ended.
  • When the job QMRDBJNFY is ended with the ENDSBS SBS(*ALL), the message CPIC908 The Submitted Job Tracker job ended with reason code 1 is added to the history log and it is expected.  The message is no indication of a problem with the job, it just alerts that the job ended because the subsystem QSYSWRK ended.
Log files used by the QMRDBJNFY are stored on the following directory:
  • /QIBM/UserData/OS400/SUBMITTEDJOBTRACKER/log.txt
  • The log files are locked by the QMRDBJNFY job and should be excluded from your Save strategy. Refer to APAR SE79992 for an explanation on a change of the locking and logging behavior of the job.
NOTE:  With the introduction of PTFs  7.4 SI83860 and 7.5 SI83834, the locking behavior for the Job has changed, refer to APAR SE79992 for more information. These PTFs change the logging behavior. Instead of always logging to log.txt in the /QIBM/UserData/OS400/SUBMITTEDJOBTRACKER directory, the logs are now written to log0.txt through log9.txt in a repeating sequence. Normally the switch to the next file in the sequence happens once per day at 2:00AM.
