Question & Answer
Question
When multiple developers are all using the same level of Rational® Application Developer for WebSphere® Software and WebSphere Application Server, how can they share Application Server profiles among them? The profiles might refer to the individual systems by name (not "localhost") and might need to be changed from time to time. What is the best way to keep everyone synchronized?
Answer
Use the standard Profile Export ( ) facility to export a copy of the profile as a configuration archive.
Ideally, this profile should not have any applications installed in it at the time of exporting.
For more on importing and exporting WebSphere Application Server profiles, see:

and
Once exported, you can store the profile -- as a configuration archive -- in your Software Configuration Management (SCM) tool to make it available to other users. Limiting the name of your profiles to "localhost" is not necessary because the Application Server import /export will resolve the server host name correctly at import.
To use the profile, a developer will retrieve the archive from the SCM tool, import the profile, and then configure applications in the RAD workspace to deploy and test with that profile.
This applies to WebSphere Application Server versions 6.0 and 6.1.
It does not apply to WebSphere Application Server versions 5.0 or 5.1, which lack the concept of a profile.
