Set project-wide properties in Rational Rhapsody

Question & Answer

Question

What is the best way to set default properties in an IBM Rational Rhapsody model?

Cause

In older documents, we recommended using the site.prp files for defining global properties. It was found that there are no clear rules when external prp files and model profiles modify the same set of properties (which should be avoided!).

Depending on the property validity range (model, configuration, package, model element) it is possible that a site.prp property has no priority on a profile property or vice versa.

Answer

To avoid trial and error which property value finally has priority, we recommend using property definition in profiles only.

- profiles can be added easily to new models

- profiles do not depend on changes that are caused by a version upgrade

- profiles can be easily modified without impact on other users

- there is no need of touching the Rhapsody installation
