Summary

IBM Cloud Pak System is affected by a remote code execution in Spring Framework (CVE-2022-22965 and CVE-2020-5421). IBM Cloud Pak System ships with AWS component that includes it but is not used by it. The fix removes Spring from the product. This security bulletin service applies to IBM Cloud Pak System, BM Cloud Pak System Software and BM Cloud Pak System Software Suite.

Vulnerability Details

CVEID:   CVE-2022-22965
DESCRIPTION:   Spring Framework could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by the improper handling of PropertyDescriptor objects used with data binding. By sending specially-crafted data to a Spring Java application, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the system. Note: The exploit requires Spring Framework to be run on Tomcat as a WAR deployment with JDK 9 or higher using spring-webmvc or spring-webflux. Note: This vulnerability is also known as Spring4Shell or SpringShell.

CVEID:   CVE-2020-5421
DESCRIPTION:   VMware Tanzu Spring Framework could allow a remote attacker to bypass security restrictions, caused by improper input validation. By using a specially-crafted jsessionid path parameter, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to bypass RFD Protection.

Remediation/Fixes

For unsupported version/release/platform IBM recommends upgrading to a fixed, supported version of the product.

In response to the above vulnerabilities Cloud Pask System removed the related Spring classes with IBM Cloud Pak System v2.3.3.4. Customers are recommended to take action and upgrade as soon as possible. 

For IBM Cloud Pak System v2.3.0.1 through V2.3.3.3 Interim Fix 1 upgrade to IBM Cloud Pak System V2.3.3.4 for Intel at Fix Central.

Workarounds and Mitigations

Recommended action is to remove Spring classes manually. Contact IBM Cloud Pak System Support for details.
