Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H177277

Symptom

Using the Remote Supervisor Adapter II (RSA II) remote disk functionally to boot to a ServeRAID CD will fail after the software on the CD starts booting to Linux. This could also occur on any CD that runs Linux depending on the USB functionally compiled into the kernel.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • xSeries 345, type 8670, any model
  • xSeries 235, type 8671, any model

The system is configured with the following option(s):

  • IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II, option part number 59P2984, replacement part number (FRU) 59P2998

The following Network Operating Systems (NOS) are affected:

  • Red Hat Linux
  • Red Hat Linux Advanced Server
  • SUSE LINUX
  • Turbolinux
Workaround

There is currently no workaround.

Additional information

The remote drive appears as a USB composite mass storage device to the server. As such, the bootable media will need to have USB support. In this case, Linux will need to have USB support compiled into any remote bootable media for the RSA II.
