Question & Answer
Question
What JVM max heap size should be set for a Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS) Master Domain Manager (MDM) or Tivoli Dynamic Workload Console (TDWC) instance?
Cause
Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS) documentation does not provide information about the maximum value of the Heap Size because this value is handled by WebSphere Application Server (WAS).
Answer
Originally it was stated that if TDWC and TWS share the same embedded WebSphere Application server (eWAS) the suggested value of the maximumHeapSize was 2048.
However, it has been discovered that in using 2048 you can encounter native out of memory issues. If so, it is recommended to decrease the value. Values like 1536 (or more rarely, 1280) are recommended.
For 32bit instances, 1536 is suggested:
AIX, Windows32, HPUX, Linux32, Solaris, Linux PPC
The 64bit platforms can safely be set to 2048:
HPIA64, Solaris Opteron, Windows64, Linux64
For the 31bit platform, 1280 is suggested:
Linux 390
The above values are suggested for TWS v8.5 and v8.5.1, however, there could be rare situations (due to specific needs) that require fine tuning of the value.
