Process Designer fails to display after launching

Troubleshooting

Problem

The Process Designer Java applet launches successfully but doesn't display in the monitor.  The issue happens with other FileNet Process Engine Java applets, such as Process Administrator, PCC.  The problem occurs on Microsoft Windows platforms.

Symptom

The applet launches successfully, but never displays in the monitor.  The Windows taskbar might show the applet is running.

Cause

The last time the Java applet was run, the applet window was displayed on a secondary monitor.  The applet window size and location is recorded within the FileNet Process Engine user account on the FileNet Process Engine server.
Later, if that same user account is used to launch the Java applet in a single-monitor setup, the applet window opens in the secondary monitor location, not visible on the single monitor.
For example, Person-1 with a dual-monitor setup logged on to the applet as AdminUser, locating the applet window to the secondary monitor.
When Person-2 (with a single-monitor setup) logs on as AdminUser and runs the applet, the applet window is located outside the scope of the monitor.
The issue might also happen in a dual-monitor setup when the secondary monitor is disabled (for example, removing a laptop from the docking station).

Environment

The issue happens with any of the FileNet Process Engine Java applets (Process Designer, Process Administrator, Tracker, and so on).  The problem occurs on Microsoft Windows platforms.

Diagnosing The Problem

If all of the following conditions are true, then it is probable that you are encountering the issue described in this article.
  • You are running on a Microsoft Windows platform.
  • The Process Designer application running in the command window is not terminated.
  • You see the icon for the Process Designer Application in the Microsoft Windows taskbar.
  • The Process Designer does not appear on the screen.
To verify, open vwtool and execute "env -> v -> p ->" [user short name]
The output can include the window size and location values for the designer and other applications.  For example,

designer_size         string 1135;657
designer_location string 2464;371
The designer_location represents the position of the upper left of the Process Designer application.  When a single screen is attached to a Microsoft Windows system, the coordinates of the screen origin (upper left) are 0,0, and typical screen dimensions are Height 1080, Width 1920.  Your screen dimensions might be different, depending on your screen resolution.  If the saved designer_location coordinates fall outside the boundaries of your screen, then that confirms the root cause of the problem.

Resolving The Problem

Launch the Process Designer applet (or any other FileNet Process Engine Java applet),
  • Go to Windows Task Manager
  • Expand Java(TM) Platform SE library
  • Select and right-click Process Designer process
  • Maximize it
The applet window is now located in the upper left in monitor 1.  You can then drag the applet somewhere within the monitor resolving the issue.  Confirm by closing the applet and get the Process Engine environment cache output in vwtool again. It now shows values within the scope of monitor 1.
Also fixed in CPE 5.5.8.0-IF002, CPE 5.5.9.0-IF001, and CPE 5.5.10.0 and later under APAR PJ46840.
