Printing 15 CPI on an IBM 6400 ASCII Printer Using Host Print Transform (HPT)

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides instructions for printing at 15 characters per inch (CPI) on an IBM 6400 line matrix printer using Host Print Transform (HPT).

Resolving The Problem

The IBM 6400 Series printers can emulate an IBM Proprinter III or an Epson printer. Epson printers support 15 CPI, but the IBM Proprinter III printer does not. Therefore, if you try to print an IBM OS/400 or IBM i5/OS spooled file that is set up for 15 characters per inch (CPI) to an IBM 6400 Series printer and that printer is configured to be in IBM Proprinter III mode, it will compress the output to 17.1 CPI rather than printing at 15 CPI.

To print a 15 CPI spooled file to an IBM 6400 Series printer, first put the printer into Epson Mode and change the remote output queue (RMTOUTQ) description so the manufacturer type and model (MFRTYPMDL) is set to *IBM6408EP, IBM 6400 Printers (Epson Mode).
