Question
How do I prevent Developer Portal users/consumer organization owners from creating consumer organizations?
Cause
By default the Self service onboarding option is enabled. Users can go to the Developer Portal site and are able to independently sign up by clicking the "Create Account" link. This allows them to create a new consumer organization. If unchecked, this will eventually result in a large number of consumer organizations created and become difficult to manage.
Answer
It is possible to control creation of consumer organizations by disabling the self service onboarding option from API Manager.
Once self service onboarding is disabled , the "Create Account" link in Developer Portal is no longer visible and users cannot sign up and create consumer organizations by themselves. Only the administrator can create consumer organizations and assign owner. The administrator or consumer organization owner can invite a user and then the user can sign up in Developer Portal. Users can only join consumer organizations to which they are invited.
Step 1. In Developer Portal, confirm that the "Create Account" link is visible.
Step 2. Login to API Manager.
Step 3. Click Manage Catalogs.
Step 4. Click the catalog name for which you want to disable self service onboarding.
Step 5. Click Settings.
Step 6. Click Onboarding. Notice that Self service onboarding is set to "On".
Step 7. Slide the Self service on boarding to "Off". A pop-up window will be displayed. Click Disable.
Step 8. Verify that the "Create Account" link is no longer visible.
Result: Users can now only join consumer organizations by invitation. They are no longer able to independently create consumer organizations.
