PC Doctor diagnostics produces false hard drive error - IBM eServer xSeries 206, 306

Problem

A false hard drive error is reported from PC Doctor, server version. When the "Linear Verify" diagnostic, under PC Doctor, is run against some 160GB or greater capacity hard drives, the test will display and log a false error.

Symptom

A false hard drive error is reported from PC Doctor, server version. When the "Linear Verify" diagnostic, under PC Doctor, is run against some 160GB or greater capacity hard drives, the test will display and log a false error, that reads: "xx-xxx- xxx-xxxxxxx-xx-HARD DISK DRIVE: FAILED (Error Verifying Sectors 268,435,555 - 68,435,582) (Record Not Found)". Status next to the diagnostic and under the hard drive being tested will display "7/30/2004 11:26AM 'FAILED'".

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:  

  • xSeries 306, type 8836, SATA model
  • xSeries 206, type 8482, SATA model

The system is configured with one or more of the following ServeRAID options:

  • Onboard ServeRAID
  • PC ServeRAID SCSI adapter, option part number 70G8489, replacement part number (FRU) 06H9334
  • ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI adapter, option part number 76H3584, replacement part number (FRU) 76H3587
  • Netfinity ServeRAID-3H Ultra2 SCSI adapter, option part number 01K7207, replacement part number (FRU) 01K7396

The system is configured with the following RSA option:  

  • 160GB SATA Simple Swap Option, option part number 73P8003, replacement part number (FRU) 73P8001

The system is configured with PC Doctor, server 13.06 or 13.47 diagnostics. The system's diagnostics fail.

Solution  

This behavior is corrected in the latest release of BIOS. BIOS level 22A (and higher) for x206 and x306 contains a fix to this false error.

Workaround  

Ignore this error, when produced by the Liner Verify test from server versions of PC Doctor.

Additional information    

The Linear Verify test of PC Doctor, server versions, cannot be used at this time to validate the SATA HDD health.
