Opening Visual Studio IDE from IBM Rational Rhapsody results in "Failed to connect Visual Studio" error

Problem

Attempts to launch Visual Studio IDE from IBM Rational Rhapsody result in "Failed to connect Visual Studio" error.

Symptom

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Start Rhapsody
2. Add "Visual Studio Configuration"

Expected result: Visual Studio IDE starts up.

Actual result: Rhapsody fails to start Visual Studio IDE with the following error:

"Failed to connect Visual Studio"

Diagnosing The Problem

The following error is recorded in Microsoft Window's Event log:
Unable to start a DCOM Server: {656D8328-93F5-41A7-A48C-B42858161F25}.
The error "740" Happened while starting this command:
"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" -Embedding

Resolving The Problem

Make sure User Account Control (UAC) is not disrupting Rhapsody from starting devenv.exe in the background. See below is one way to disable UAC in Windows.

  1. Click the Start button and type uac in the search box.
  2. Click Change User Account Control settings.
  3. To turn off UAC, move the slider to the Never notify position, and then click OK..
