As discussed in the web article "IBM's approach to open technology", IBM has a long history of participating in the Open Source communities, contributing to Open Source projects, and using Open Source technology in IBM solutions.  With the release of Open Source Java, comes another Open Source milestone for IBM, IBM solution partners, and IBM customers; the availability of no-cost "OpenJ9 JVM based OpenJDK" IBM Semeru Runtimes with a choice of IBM licensed/TCK certified Semeru Runtime Certified Edition or Open Source licensed/uncertified Semeru Runtime Open Edition images.
With IBM contributions and the release of OpenJDK for IBM's AIX operating system, IBM customers and IBM solution partners now have two Java solutions available for AIX:
  • Open Source Java (IBM Semeru Runtimes)

AIX users can now implement to the most current releases of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and obtain Java security vulnerabilities the moment they become available.  It is as easy as  downloading the Java images from the Semeru Runtime Certified Edition or Semeru Runtime Open Edition web sites, extracting the contents using standard UNIX archive extraction commands, and restarting your application.  IBM customers and IBM solution partners can leverage the open source community for assistance or consider IBM's  Open Source Java support subscription for more reliable and timely support.
  • IBM Enterprise Java (versions 7.0, 7.1, and 8.0)

If your company continues to develop or implement solutions using IBM's Enterprise Java, IBM still has you covered.  The existing download and  support options for IBM's Enterprise Support will continue for many years to come (visit the IBM Java Enterprise Lifecycle web page for end of service dates).
Please read this document carefully to understand all options for downloading and obtaining support for Open Source Java (IBM Semeru Runtimes).
We strongly recommend that you review the "Getting Support and Downloads for Java on AIX and Linux on IBM Power Systems" web page for an easy to read list of options available for downloading and getting support for Java on AIX.
With Open Source IBM Semeru Runtimes, comes changes to distribution and support options for IBM customers and IBM solution partners.  IBM Enterprise Java 7.0, 7.1, and 8.0 versions will continue to be distributed and supported by the IBM AIX product teams. Open Source Java "IBM Semeru Runtimes" is considered an Open Source or adoption technology and therefore is currently not distributed or supported by the IBM AIX product.

  • Distribution of Open Source Java (IBM Semeru Runtimes)

** IBM customers and solution partners who are adopting, testing, migrating, and implementing applications and solutions using Open Source Java (IBM Semeru Runtimes) will need to obtain the images and fixes for Open Source Java directly from the IBM  Semeru Runtime Certified Edition or Semeru Runtime Open Edition web sites.

Prior to the release of Open Source Java (IBM Semeru Runtimes), IBM AIX customers and solution partners were limited to IBM Enterprise Java versions (e.g., 7.0, 7.1, and 8.0).  These IBM Enterprise Java versions can only be obtained from IBM through a paid support subscription (software maintenance agreement or SWMA) for an IBM software product (e.g., WebSphere, Sterling, Tivoli, AIX, iOS, etc) that bundles IBM Enterprise Java.  IBM Enterprise Java is distributed with the applicable IBM software media (e.g., AIX) because the IBM software product has one or more features with dependency on IBM Enterprise Java.

Open Source Java is available as a free download from the IBM Semeru Runtimes website, and will not be distributed with the AIX Software Media.  This includes the distribution of base feature images, feature updates, and security vulnerabilities. The only installable formats for Open Source Java will be those made available through the IBM Semeru Runtimes website.  IBM customers and solution partners, who need customized installable formats or formats compatible with IBM software installers, should contact their local IBM account representative to discuss options available for the customized solution.

  • Support of Open Source Java (IBM Semeru Runtimes)

** As there are no AIX feature dependencies on Open Source Java (IBM Semeru Runtimes), support of Open Source "IBM Semeru Runtimes" Java is currently not included with your IBM AIX software maintenance (a.k.a. subscription or SWMA).

Because Open Source "IBM Semeru Runtimes" Java is an Open Source or adoption technology, base support is provided through the Open Source communities and forums. IBM customers and solution partners who need a more reliable support structure can purchase a separate Open Source Java support subscription in order to obtain support from IBM for the use of Open Source Java for customized or non-IBM applications and when not specifically used by IBM bundled products.   To purchase an Open Source Java support subscription for Open Source Java, please visit the "IBM Runtimes for Business" web page or contact your local IBM account representative.

Support for business or mission critical Java based applications implemented on AIX is still available for IBM and non-IBM applications using IBM Enterprise Java 7.0, 7.1., and 8.0 with a paid and valid AIX software subscription. For a list of topics acceptable and not acceptable for remote technical support, please visit the IBM "Support Guide" web page. For a list of in-support versions of IBM Enterprise Java and the end of service dates, please visit the "IBM Java Lifecycle" web page.

If you need further assistance with the planning, testing, migration, or implementation of Open Source "IBM Semeru Runtimes" Java on AIX, please contact your local IBM account representative.
** At such time that AIX features with Java dependencies are migrated from using IBM Enterprise Java to using Open Source Java (IBM Semeru Runtimes), the scope of support for "IBM Semeru Runtimes" on AIX, included with your AIX support maintenance, will be limited to the use of "IBM Semeru Runtimes" downloads with the AIX supported features only. For paid support of "IBM Semeru Runtimes" with non AIX features, such as other vendor Java-based solutions or custom Java applications, clients will need to sign up for the "IBM Runtimes for Business" support offering. For support of "IBM Semeru Runtimes" when used with IBM sold solutions, clients should open support cases directly with those product teams.
