TM1 Architect not defaulting on dimension pick list when users don't have access to the pick list cube

Troubleshooting

Problem

When a cube contains two pick lists (a pick list cube and pick list dimension), and the user does not have access to the pick list cube, it is expected to default to the pick list dimension and allow the user to choose from that list. However, this results in having no pick list at all i.e. an empty element.

Cause

This interaction is caused by TM1's Pick List Order of Precedence:
When multiple pick lists apply to an individual cube cell, the following order of precedence is used to determine which pick list is used in the cell:
  • If a pick list control cube exists and contains a pick list definition for the current cube cell, the definition in the pick list control cube is used.
  • If a pick list control cube does not exist, the elements that identify the current cell are examined in reverse order in a search for Picklist element attributes. The first Picklist element attribute that is encountered in this search is used in the cell.

In reference to the scenario above, both a pick list cube and pick list dimension exists for the cube cell. This scenario satisfies the first condition, therefore TM1 will use the definition of the pick list cube over the pick list dimension.  Even though the user does not have access to the pick list cube and from their perspective the control cube does not "exist", TM1 will not display the pick list dimension. Instead, the user will see an empty cell without a pick list as they do not have privileges for that control cube.

Resolving The Problem

For the scenario above, the solution would be to give users permission to the pick list cube or remove the pick list cube so that only the pick list dimension exists.
Due to TM1's pick list precedence order, we recommend that only one type of pick list (e.g. control cube or element attribute) be applicable to any given cell in the cube for every user. Additionally, TM1 does not currently support the interaction where a user without permissions on the pick list cube will default to the pick list dimension. Therefore, we advise not to use security on the control cube to determine which type of pick list is used.
