How to remove spaces in a csv file which affect the hierarchy of imported requirements in a RequisitePro view

Problem

This technote provides steps to remove spaces from a comma separated file (CSV) which affect the hierarchy of requirements when imported into IBM® Rational® RequisitePro®.

Cause

In a CSV file, if there is a extra space after the requirement tag, the hierarchy of the requirements is lost. This problem is usually seen when a view is exported to a csv file. To make sure that the hierarchy is not lost please follow the following steps to remove the extra space.

Resolving The Problem

This issue was logged as a defect under RATLC00480297 which has since been resolved in RequisitePro version 7.0 and later.

Workaround:

Steps to automatically remove spaces in the CSV file:

  1. Open csv file in Microsoft® Excel
  2. Select the Tag column
  3. Select Edit > Replace then select the Options button
  4. Select the Search drop down and select By Columns
  5. In the Find what field input a space and leave the Replace with field blank
  6. Select Replace All.

Selecting Replace All will eliminate all the spaces in each row of the Tag column.
