Problem

Command line actions through serial port give errors

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H183809

Symptom

While running the command line interface through the serial port, erroneous persistent errors are seen. When running the command sys health query v after a
failure has recovered, the command will still report an error. Also, the Identify command will not work while running the command line interface through the serial port.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServers:

  • an xSeries 366, type 8863, any model
  • an xSeries 346, type 8840, any model
  • an xSeries 336, type 8837, any model
  • an xSeries 236, type 8841, any model

The following Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) firmware versions are affected:

  • The BMC Controller Firmware version 1.12 or earlier for the xSeries 346 is affected.
  • The BMC Controller Firmware version 1.05 or earlier_for the xSeries 236 is affected.
  • The BMC Controller Firmware version 1.05 or earlier_for the xSeries 336 is affected.
  • The BMC Controller Firmware version 1.02 or earlier_for the xSeries 366 is affected.
Solution

Baseboard Management Controller firmware update, targeted for release third Quarter2005.

Workaround

For the Sys Health Query command. A user can run a straight hex command 18 00 02 to do a cold reset to the Baseboard Management Controller. This will cause the Baseboard Management Controller to re-scan the system sensors. After the re-scan the correct info will be reported.

For the Blue Light command. A user can run a straight hex command 00 00 04 to do an Identify command to the Baseboard Management Controller. This will cause the Baseboard Management Controller to light the blue identification LED for the default of 15 seconds.
