Troubleshooting

Problem

Installation fails with blinking cursor under ServerGuide 7.3 - IBM eServer xSeries 206

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H183791

Symptom
The ServerGuide 7.3 installation process freezes with a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. The problem occurs after a system reboot following the ServerGuide prompt to remove the Microsoft Windows CDROM. The problem only occurs when using 80GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drives.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServers:

  • an xSeries 206, type 8487, any model
  • an xSeries 306, type 8489, any model
  • an xSeries 306, type 1878, any model

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of ServerGuide 7.3.02. The target date for the release is scheduled for second Quarter, 2005. It will be available from the ServerGuide Electronic fulfillment web site.

Note: It is included with new systems or an upgrade can be ordered using the web at the web site above.

Additional information

ServerGuide contains code to handle the Windows installation to 80GB SATA drives. This code was not activated for machine types 8487, 1878, and 8489 for ServerGuide 7.3.
