IBM Support

Management Module communication error - IBM eServer BladeCenter HS20

Troubleshooting

Problem

The SP (Service Processor) Communication error that is recoverable by the firmware indicates that the BMC was busy and not responding to initial requests from the Management Module. The Service Processor Communication error that is unrecoverable by the firmware indicates that the firmware flash may have been interrupted or failed and is running only a base Kernel in the chip.

Symptom

The SP (Service Processor) Communication error that is recoverable by the firmware indicates that the BMC was busy and not responding to initial requests from the Management Module. This can happen occasionally, but the Management Module has logic that retries after a predefined timeout.

Workaround

The Service Processor Communication error that is recoverable by the firmware indicates that the BMC was busy and not responding to initial requests from the Management Module. This can happen occasionally, but the Management Module has logic that retries after a predefined timeout. The Service Processor Communication error that is unrecoverable by the firmware indicates that the firmware flash may have been interrupted or failed and is running only a base Kernel in the chip.

Please power off your Blade Server and do the following:

MAKE SURE THE BLADE IS POWERED OFF AND ALL BLADES ARE DISCOVERED BEFORE FLASHING
  1. Open a Web browser.

In the address or URL field, type the IP address or host name of the Management Module to which you want to connect. The Enter Network Password window opens.

Note: The Management Module defaults to DHCP.

If a DHCP host is unavailable, the Management Module assigns a static IP address of 192.168.70.125.

  2. Type your user name and password in the Enter Network Password window.

  3. Select a timeout value, in minutes, in the field provided. If your browser is inactive for that number of minutes, the Management Module logs you off the Web interface.

  4. Click Continue to start the session.  The browser opens the System Health page, which gives you a quick view of the system status.

  5. In the navigation frame, click Firmware Update under Blade Tasks, select the Target blade slot number, then click Browse.

  6. Switch to the drive and directory containing the unpackaged files. Navigate to the PKT file you want to update, named as:

BWBTxxy.PKT (Where xx = build ID, and y = revision.)

  7. Click Open.

The file (including the full path) appears in the box beside Browse.

  8. To begin the update process, click Update.

A progress indicator opens as the file is transferred to temporary storage.

A confirmation page opens when the file transfer is completed and the BladeCenter Integrated System Management Processor has been restarted.

MAKE SURE THE BLADE IS POWERED OFF AND ALL BLADES ARE DISCOVERED BEFORE FLASHING
Additional information

The Service Processor Communication error that is unrecoverable by the firmware indicates that the firmware flash may have been interrupted or failed and is running only a base Kernel in the chip. If the workaround steps do not recover the blade, please do a bypass of the Baseboard Management Controller.
