IBM Support

Linux installer does not detect USB CD-ROM on Telco chassis - IBM BladeCenter

Troubleshooting

Problem

When attempting to install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for x86, SUSE Linux Professional 9.0, Turbo Linux Enterprise Server 8 for x86, or SCO Linux Server powered by United Linux, version 4.0, the installer will act as though it does not recognize theCD-ROM drive. This will prevent an installation unless the user manually loads the USB storage driver.

Resolving The Problem

Source
RETAIN tip: H181546

Symptom
When attempting to install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for x86, SUSE Linux Professional 9.0, Turbo Linux Enterprise Server 8 for x86, or SCO Linux Server powered by United Linux, version 4.0, the installer will act as though it does not recognize the CD-ROM drive. This will prevent an installation unless the user manually loads the USB storage driver.

Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM BladeCenter:
  • IBM BladeCenter HS40, type 8839, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter HS20, type 8678, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter HS20, Type 8843, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter HS20, type 8832, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter JS20, type 8842, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter LS20, type 8850, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter T, type 8730, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter T, type 8720, any model
The following operating systems are affected:
  • SCO Linux Server powered by United Linux, version 4.0
  • SUSE LINUX Professional 9.x
  • SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8 x86
  • TurboLinux Enterprise Server 8 powered by United Linux
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software. Please see the ServerProven compatibility page for more information.

The USB-storage device driver for the USB CD-ROM is affected.

Solution
  • For SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8 for x86, this problem will be fixed in the SUSE Linux Enterprise Family 9 operating system.
  • For SUSE LINUX Professional 9.0, this problem will be fixed in the SUSE Linux Professional 9.5 operating system.
  • For TurboLinux Enterprise Server 8, there is no known status for when a fix will be available.
  • For SCO Linux Server powered by United Linux version 4.0, there is no known status for when a fix will be available.
Workaround
Type the following parameter at the boot screen (make sure to check the install instructions for your server to see if any additional parameters are needed):

insmod=USB-storage

Additional information
The problem occurs because the installer does not correctly identify the CD-ROM and load the USB-storage driver for it. The command parameter, insmod=USB-storage, forces the driver to load regardless of the installer's detection sequence, so that the CD-ROM will function properly. This problem may not occur when another USB storage device (such as a USB diskette drive or a USB key) is attached to the system, as those devices will trigger the needed driver to load as well.
