Symptom
The IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter (RSA) will sometimes reject a flash upgrade attempt. Once the adapter contains firmware for a specific machine type model (MTM), it will reject firmware for another machine type model. This can occur when an adapter obtained from FRU stock contains code for a specific MTM, rather than the generic option code; or if you move an RSA from one type of machine to another.

Affected configuration

The system may be any of the following IBM e(logo)servers:

  • IBM eServer xSeries 345, type 8670, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 342, type 8669, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 330, type 8675, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 330, type 8674, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 330, type 8654, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 305, type 8673, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 300, type 8672, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 255, type 8685, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 235, type 8671, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 232, type 8668, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 220, type 8645, any model.
  • IBM eServer xSeries 205, type 8480, any model.

The system is configured with the following option(s):

  • IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter, Option p/n 09N7585, FRU 36L9912
Solution

Flash each RSA sub-component individually by following the following steps:

  1. Download the latest Remote Supervisor Adapter firmware diskette for your system.
  2. Boot your server with the Remote Supervisor Adapter firmware diskette.
  3. Select the Update System Management Firmware option.
  4. Select the Hardware Flash option.
  5. Select the Erase NVRAM option.
  6. Select the Boot ROM option.
  7. Select the Main Application option.
  8. Select the Remote Graphics Application option.
