SoundMAX audio driver does not install from the recovery CD - IBM IntelliStation M Pro (Type 6229)

Symptom

After recovering an IntelliStation M Pro, Type 6229, using a Recovery CD, the native Intel AC 97 audio driver will be installed instead of the preloaded SoundMAX with SPX driver.

After recovering an IntelliStation M Pro, Type 6229, using a Recovery CD, open Device Manager, click on the "Sound, video and game controllers" section. If you do not see "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio", but instead see "Intel AC '97 Audio Controller" then this tip applies.

NOTE: This issue will not happen if the system is recovered using disk-to-disk recovery.

Affected configurations

• The system may be any model of the IBM IntelliStation M Pro, type 6229.
• The audio device driver for the integrated SoundMAX audio is affected.

Solution

Download and apply the "SoundMAX with SPX audio for Microsoft Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, XP" audio driver (build DSIZ14US, or later).

Workaround

Continue to use the Intel audio driver for audio support.

Additional information

The web released driver is the same driver as originally shipped the preload. Once you install this driver, the audio will be recovered to the original preloaded state.
