Problem

IBM OS/2 Warp Server does not see tape drive for Tape Backup.

Resolving The Problem

Unable to see tape drive in IBM OS/2 Warp Server

Follow the procedures below if OS/2 Warp Server does not recognize your tape drive.

  • Verify hardware and make sure that the server is able to see the tape drive before troubleshooting the software.
  • There should be 2 driver lines in the CONFIG.SYS file that look something like:
    • DEVICE=C:\PSNS\ADSMTAPE.SYS
    • DEVICE=C:\PSNS\ADSMSDID.SYS
  • Check to make sure the files exist on the hard disk drive. Make sure that the adsmtape.sys and adsmsdid.sys physically exist in the PSNS subdirectory.
  • The drivers must load successfully. Next time you reboot, look out for status messages from the drivers.
    • ADSMTAPE.SYS prints out a message something like:
      • ANR9810: SCSI Tape Device Driver Initializing ...
      • ANR9811: Ready for operations
    • ADSMSDID.SYS prints out a message about the 'SCSI Device Inquiry Driver'.
  • If the drivers fail to load, it may be that the SCSI subsystem is not set up properly.
  • There should be a line in CONFIG.SYS that reads:
    • BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
  • There should also be a line that loads the adapter driver (.ADD) for your SCSI adapter. If those lines are not present, you need to go back to the OS/2 selective installation and install SCSI support.

Using the System Information Tool to verify SCSI support

You can tell if all is as it should be by using the System Information Tool, which is part of the IBM OS/2 Warp BonusPak and installs to the System Setup folder. It should be able to find information about your SCSI adapter and any attached SCSI devices.

  • Write down the Logical Unit Number of the adapter (which will probably be 0 unless you have more than one) and the Physical Unit Number (PUN) of the tape device.
  • Select Refresh from the menu on the Storage Devices container. If all is well, then PSnS should be able to detect the tape device. If this fails, then either the device is not supported, or something is going wrong with the ADSMSDID.SYS driver, possibly in the hardware.
  • It should still be possible to use the tape device if you configure it manually: Select New -> then SCSI Tape Drive from the Storage Devices menu. You will be able to enter the numbers you wrote down earlier from the System Information Tool. If all the earlier checks were OK, then the tape drive should now work. If, when you click OK, it says 'Could not reach a tape drive...', make absolutely certain the numbers are right and if they are not, then there may be a hardware problem.
