Problem

This document provides information for troubleshooting tape drive media errors.

Resolving The Problem

If you are receiving a tape drive media error, please try one of the following:

Software media error	Suggested resolution
No media found	Try a different piece of media Clean tape drive several times in a row. Sometimes cleaning drive only once will not remove all debris from the read / write head(s). Update firmware on tape drive.

Hardware media error	Suggested resolution
Tape movement	An error message is displayed after inserting the magazine or loading tapes. Verify that the tapes are inserted correctly in the magazine.
Tape stuck in drive	Turn the unit off and then on and retry unloading the tape from the autoloader front panel. Ensure the backup host software is not reserving the slot. The backup software needs to cancel the reservation.
Tape stuck in transport	Run the Recalibrate Loader test. Open the door. Remove the magazine and then gently ease the tape out of the transport. Do not grasp the back of the transport assembly. Call your service representative.
Tape stuck in back storage slot	Using the front panel display, open the door. Pull the door down, and remove the magazine. Push the tape into the back slot until it clicks into the slot. Push the tape in again until it clicks and releases.
Transport will not load or unload a tape	Run the Recalibrate Loader test. Ensure you are using the correct tape type and magazine for your autoloader drive configurations.
Tapes or cleaning cartridge incompatible with drive	Ensure you are using media and a cleaning cartridge that is compatible with the drive.

Note: To better assist IBM in troubleshooting your system, we ask that you first update all system codes to the latest levels. These include: System BIOS, Advanced System Management firmware (if applicable), SCSI and ServeRAID controller BIOS, Firmware and drivers, Diagnostics, hard disk drive firmware and component drivers (NIC's, tape drives, etc.). These updates contain many documented and undocumented fixes for the most common issues. They may also increase your system's performance and reliability.
