Symptom
The onboard AMD Ethernet adapter will not function after you upgrade to Microsoft Windows 2000 from Microsoft Windows NT4.

Note: This symptom occurs on systems where the desktop management interface (DMI) service layer was installed for the AMD Ethernet under Windows NT4.

Affected configuration
The system is any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:
  • A Netfinity 7600 server, type 8665, any model
  • A Netfinity 7100 server, type 8666, any model
  • A Netfinity 7000 M10 server, type 8680, any model
  • A Netfinity 7000 server, type 8651, any model
  • A Netfinity 6000R server, type 8682, any model
  • A Netfinity 5600 server, type 8664, any model
  • A Netfinity 5500 M20 server, type 8662, any model
  • A Netfinity 5500 M10 server, type 8661, any model
  • A Netfinity 5500 server, type 8660, any model
  • A Netfinity 5100 server, type 8658, any model
  • A Netfinity 5000 server, type 8659, any model
  • A Netfinity 4500 server, type 8656, any model

The following network operating systems are affected:

  • Windows NT version 4 with any service pack applied
  • Windows 2000 Professional with any service pack applied
  • Windows 2000 Server with any service pack applied
  • Windows 2000 Advanced Server with any service pack applied

The device driver for the onboard AMD Ethernet adapter is affected.

Solution
  1. In Windows 2000, remove the AMD Ethernet device driver as well as any Netfinity Hotplug Services.
  2. Select the Start menu and click Run.
  3. In the popup window type regedit and press Enter.
  4. In the "regedit" window, in the left pane, double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  5. Double-click System.
  6. Double-click CurrentControlSet.
  7. Double-click Services.
  8. Click PCNET and press the Delete key.
  9. Click Yes at the confirmation prompt.
  10. Reboot the system and click here to install the latest version of the AMD Ethernet driver.
  11. Install "Netfinity Hotplug Services and Netfinity Director".

Note: Netfinity Director must be version 2.12 or later to work correctly under Windows 2000.

Additional information
This behavior affects all IBM Netfinity servers with an onboard AMD ethernet 10/100 network adapter. Under Windows NT4, as part of the configuration of Netfinity Director, a DMI service layer is installed on top of the AMD ethernet driver. This DMI service layer is incompatible with Windows 2000.

During an upgrade to Windows 2000, the DMI service layer software will cause the AMD ethernet driver to stop functioning. When the AMD ethernet is in a non-functioning condition, merely uninstalling and re-installing the Windows 2000 AMD ethernet driver will not resolve the problem.

Note: You must delete a registry key as part of Netfinity Director because Windows NT4 will cause the AMD Ethernet adapter to fail when you upgrade to Windows 2000.
