ServeRAID logical drive migration (LDM)
This document contains general information on performing a ServeRAID Logical Drive Migration using the ServeRAID Manager utility program for all supported Microsoft Windows NT and Novell NetWare servers.

Prerequsites
  1. Ensure that a full tape backup of data has been done.
  2. Click here to download and install the latest IBM Hard Drive Update program.
  3. Click here to download and install latest BIOS and firmware.
  4. Click here to download and install the latest ServeRAID drivers
  5. Uninstall any older ServeRAID Administration & Monitoring Utilities.
  6. Click here to download and install the latest IBM ServeRAID Manager program.

Migrating ServeRAID logical drives
  1. Start the ServeRAID Manager program.
  2. Select the magnifying scope icon to scan for new ready drives
  3. Click Manager Systems and then click Controller 1, Arrays, then Array A (xxxxMB).
  4. Right-click Array A (xxxxMB) and click Properties. Record the following:

    Array Size in MB             XXXXX
    Free Space in MB             XXXXX
    Number of Logical Drives     X
    Number of Physical Drives    X

Note: This is very important so that you can make comparisons once the LDM is completed.

  5. Click Array A (xxxxMB), Logical Drives In Array, then click Logical Drive 1. Under the Description of Value section to the right, record the following for each logical drive:

    Data Space in MB:     XXXXX
    Parity Space in MB:   XXXXX

  6. Click Array A (xxxxMB), click Actions, and select Logical Drive Migration.

Important: Please read and understand this section.

  7. Double-click the number of (RDY) drives and click Next.
  8. Select one of the following options:
    • Increasing free space - Using this feature you can add one, two, or three physical hard drives to an existing array so you can create another logical drive in the array.
    • Increase logical drive space - Using this feature you can add one, two, or three physical hard drives to an existing array so you can expand the size of the logical drives in the array.
Increasing free space
To add physical hard drives to an existing array to create another logical drive in the array complete the following steps:

Example using 4x9.1GB drives, with 2x 750MB logical drives created on the same array
Logical Drive Size New size Level New level
1 750MB 750MB 5 5
2 750MB 750MB 5 5
Free space 23784KB 32712KB 0 0

Click Apply, and you will now see a 3rd Logical Drive appear as a GRAY drive indicator, which states the following: Logical Drive 8 (750MB)

  1. Right-click Array A (xxxxMB) and click Properties. Record the following changes:

Array Size in MB:          26034      <- Size of (3) 9.1GB drives
    Free Space in MB           23784
    Number of Logical Drives   2
    Number of Physical Drives  3

Start of the LDM on Logical Drive 1:
Array Size in MB:            34712     <- New size of (4) 9.1GB drives
Free Space in MB:            32462     <- Notice the increase of size from above
Number of Logical Drives     3         <- Added the virtual logical drive
Number of Physical Drives    4         <- Total amount of drives in array

After each LDM completes, a synchronization of the logical drive is performed.

Start of LDM on Logical Drive 2:
Array Size in MB:           34712     <- New size of (4) 9.1GB drives
Free Space in MB:           32587     <- Notice the increase of size from above
Number of Logical Drives    3         <- Added the virtual logical drive
Number of Physical Drives   4         <- Total amount of drives in array

Completed LDM of all logical drives
Array Size in MB:           34712     <- New size of (4) 9.1GB drives
Free Space in MB:           32712     <- Notice the increase of size from above
Number of Logical Drives    2         <- Total number of logical drives
Number of Physical Drives   4         <- Total amount of drives in array

Note: After the migration has completed for Increase the free space by XXXXMB in array X option, you can go to ServeRAID Manager, under Managed Systems, select the Logical Drives In Array A selection, go to the Actions menu, and select Create Logical Drive In Array A.

Each logical drive will represents a disk in Windows NT Disk Administrator.
  1. Now minimize the ServeRAID Manager program and open Windows NT Disk Administrator. Below is an example of what you should expect to see:

    Disk Administrator

    Disk 0
    750MB             ldm example 1

Note: That there is no change in partition size.

    Disk 1
    750MB             ldm example 2

Note: That there is no change in partition size.

    Disk 2
    XXXMB             ldm example 3
Note: You can change the RAID levels when no (RDY) drives are available, by selecting Array A (xxxxMB), and go to the Actions menu, select Change Raid Level from X to X
Increasing logical drive space
To add physical hard drives to an existing array expand the size of the logical drives in the array complete the following steps:

Example using 4x 9.1GB drives, with 2x 750MB logical drives created on the same array
Logical drive Size New size Level New level
1 750MB 1125MB 5 5
2 750MB 1125MB 5 5
Free space 23784KB 32712KB None None
  1. Click Apply, and you will now see a 3rd Logical Drive appear as a GRAY drive indicator, which states the following: Logical Drive 8 (1125MB)

Right-click Array A (xxxxMB) and click Properties.

    Notice the following changes:
Array Size in MB:           26034       <- Size of (3) 9.1GB drives
    Free Space in MB:           23784

Free Space in MB:           32087       <- Notice the decrease of size from above
Number of Logical Drives    3           <- Added the virtual logical drive
Number of Physical Drives   4           <- Total amount of drives in array

Completed LDM of all logical drives
Array Size in MB:           34712       <- New size of (4) 9.1GB drives
Free Space in MB:           31712       <- Notice the decrease of size from above
Number of Logical Drives    2           <- Total number of logical drives
Number of Physical Drives   4           <- Total amount of drives in array

  2. Now that the LDM has completed, exit the ServeRAID Manager program, shut down NT and reboot.
  3. Start the Windows NT Disk Administrator program, and select YES to write signatures when asked. See the following examples

    Disk 0
    1124MB
    ldm example 4ldm example 5

Note: That there is no change in partition size, but an increase in the disk size.

    Disk 1
    1124MB
    ldm example 6ldm example 7

Note: That there is no change in partition size, but an increase in the disk size.

Tip: You can only make the free space at the end of the C: partition, a new partition. You cannot make this a full partition. But you can totally delete only your 750MB D: partition, and merge the new free space to make full 1124MB partition, by performing the following:

  1. Backup your data on any partition other than C:\ partition.
  2. Right-click D:\ and select Delete, you should see the following:

    Disk 1
    1124MB ldm example 8ldm example 9

  3. Right-click the free space and select Delete. You should see the following:

    Disk 1
    1124MB
    ldm example 10

  4. Right-click the new free space
  5. SelectCreate/Commit Changes Now,
  6. Select YES to create partition anyway
  7. Select Commit Changes Now
  8. Right-click the new free space again, you now have the option to Format.

You should now have one complete partition, ready to be created, formatted, and your data is now ready to be restored from your backup. You do not need to reboot Windows NT to have this change made.

For a Novell NetWare Server
Note: With the primary SYS volume already created, you cannot expand the actual size of the SYS Volume. NetWare simply will not recognize the new disk space. You can only create a new disk array using the ServeRAID Manager program, then down the server, type server at the DOS prompt, scan for new devices, and create a new volume.

Troubleshooting tips for client access for ServeRAID Manager
Can the server ping the client machine? No! The problem is on the server end...
