3.0 Installation instructions for Microsoft Windows XP Professional plus Service Pack 2

Before installing Windows XP Pro, you must first create a SCSI device driver diskette. To create the diskette:

  1. Go to: Software and device drivers - IBM eServer BladeCenter LS20.
  2. Locate and select the SCSI device driver for Windows XP.
  3. Click the executable (exe) file and follow the prompts to download the device driver to a diskette.

To install Windows XP Pro, complete the following steps:

  1. Insert the XP Professional SP2 CD into the BladeCenter CD drive.
  2. Press the media tray button on the front of the LS20 blade server to make sure that this blade has ownership of the CD drive.
  3. Press the video select button on the front of the LS20 blade server to make sure that this blade has ownership of the keyboard/video/mouse (KVM).
  4. Turn on the blade server.
  5. When you are prompted with the message "Press any key to boot from cd", press any key to start the blade server from the Windows XP CD.
  6. Press F6 to transfer the device driver files to a local hard disk drive. This takes a few minutes.
  7. When you are prompted for the device driver for the SCSI controller, press S to specify the Windows XP device driver. Insert the XP SCSI device driver diskette into the BladeCenter diskette drive, and press Enter.
  8. When prompted to confirm installation of the LSI Logic device driver for XP, press Enter.
  9. When prompted to install the XP LSI Logic device driver along with the operating system, press Enter.
  10. When asked if you would like to install Windows XP or perform a repair, press Enter to begin a new installation.
  11. When the licensing agreement is displayed, read the licensing agreement, press Page Down to scroll to the bottom of the screen, and press F8 to select I Agree.
  12. When Windows XP Professional Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the blade server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows XP Professional:
    • Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight non-partitioned space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows XP and press Enter.
    • Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Non-partitioned space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows XP and press C. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the non partitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB) and press Enter.
    • Delete a partition.
  13. Select the drive partition and press Enter.
  14. When you are prompted to select a file system, select NTFS file system.

    Notes:

    • Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes.
    • The blade server restarts to the graphical portion of Setup where Setup continues with the installation of Windows XP. During this process, Setup automatically installs and configures devices in the blade server. This process takes several minutes.
  15. Change the regional settings if you are not installing the blade server in the U.S. Click Next.

Note: To modify the regional settings after installing Windows XP, click Control Panel and click Regional Options.

  16. In the Personalize Your Software window, when you are prompted for your name and organization, type your name in the Name field and type your organization in the Organization field. The names that you type are used as default blade server names. Applications that you later install on the blade server use this information for the product registration and document identification. Click Next.
  17. When you are prompted for the Windows XP CD-Key, type the Windows XP CD-Key in the applicable fields. Click Next. The blade server name can be changed in this window. (Setup uses the organization name that was entered previously, as a suggested name for the blade server.)
  18. In the Administrator Password window, when you are prompted for an administrator password, type the password and click Next.

Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters with at least one number for your password.

  19. In the Time Zone window, set the current time. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value that you want to change and enter the new values using the keyboard or the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys. Click Next.

Note: Windows XP services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the blade server. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the blade server location to avoid problems.

  20. When you are prompted that Windows XP will automatically adjust the screen resolution, click OK.
  21. In Welcome to Microsoft Windows, click Next.
  22. In the Help Protect Your PC window, when you are prompted to turn on automatic updates, do so. If the blade server is connected to the Internet, the Security Updates wizard will download security patches for XP.
  23. In the "Who will use this computer" window, type the names of the primary users for the blade server, and click Next.
  24. Click Finish.
