This release note summarizes the firmware changes made to the IBM LTO3 tape drive firmware from version 69U2 to 87G0.

Version 69U2

Changes made to the IBM LTO3 tape drive firmware from version 5CM0 to 69U2.

  1. Reset condition during Write not handled correctly.
  2. A condition of nested error recovery procedures resulted in long recovery and ultimately timed out with error.
  3. The drive may change its own statistics dynamically during read/write operation of worn drive/medium. The possibility existed for the drive to become a marginal reader as a result of this function, thus appearing to read slowly.
  4. Error on Rewind after Write command is aborted.
  5. Tape Alert 18 not set correctly when Cartridge Memory is unreadable.
  6. Cannot detect motor is stopped due to an error, resulting in timeout.
  7. If Log Sense command is issued during an operation that takes a long time, eg.. Clean, Unload, it may timeout.
  8. RESET can occur during write at track turn.
  9. The drive firmware was not expecting a brand new cartridge to be used when making firmware update tape.
  10. Read Buffer/Cartridge Memory hang when invalid offset value.
  11. When Error Correction Code is severely stressed an invalid C2 correction could occur resulting in a read permanent error.
  12. Wrong retry number in Error Recovery Procedure, Unexpected nested retries causes timeout.
  13. After a parity error, certain counters are not valid and must be ignored. If not a permanent error may result.
  14. If the drive is Persistent Reserved, and another host issues Allow Medium Removal command, drive may return Reservation Conflict.
  15. Servo enhancement: Added logic to prevent remote possibility of off-track write.
  16. Enhanced Cartridge Memory reading reliability.
  17. Improved wrap turn Error Recovery Procedure.
  18. Read error from LOCATE command: When a drive receives LOCATE/SPACE request during reading beyond the target dataset of the previous LOCATE/SPACE request, it should stop reading immediately and start the next operation. The drive does not stop reading and results in READ error.
  19. GEN2 cartridge could not be read on either LTO2 or LTO3 but was readable on the drive which wrote it. Error Recovery Procedure modified to enable reading.
  20. Under certain rare circumstances, a drive may reset immediately following a Fault Symptom Code 7A00.
  21. If a write command is issued immediately after a cartridge is loaded, without a Test Unit Ready command, the drive may reset.
  22. 2nd Filemark lost in error recovery on Space to BOT.
  23. The erase command may time out if host does not remain attentive. Erase may take 2 hours.
  24. In rare cases the drive will report a FSC 6000 during a write, or a positioning command after a write, due to an incorrect determination of where the drive is writing.
  25. Performance problem with Veritas NetBackup: Due to a speed matching problem, the incorrect speed was selected causing this issue.
  26. Corrected a condition which caused the drive to report Early warning too early.
  27. Under certain rare instance, the drive will incorrectly report a read perm and error with a FSC 7060.
  28. Improved the way the drive recovered after the drive failed to put the pin away in the cartridge on an unthread.
  29. Various fixes to Log Page 14h.
  30. After a servo error is encountered, the drive would sometime use an incorrect starting position for the Error Recovery Procedure.
  31. Fix Stuck cartridge due to bad Cartridge Memory write.
  32. A WORM cartridge initialized by another drive manufacturer might fail with a FSC 7C50.
  33. Fix Permanent read error reported due to Error on space to End of Data.
  34. Corrected write permanent error incorrectly reported for a good dataset.
  35. When a host has a Persistent Reserve on a drive and issues a Reserve or Release to the same drive, the drive will incorrectly return a reservation conflict.
  36. Enhanced tension control to improve media life.
  37. Added Send Diagnostics for Read Thermal Sensor.
  38. Fix rare condition where drive would reset on a permanent write error.
  39. Drive reports servo errors on write.
