Problem
System reboots randomly or during heavy I/O for Servers.
Resolving The Problem
| Here are some suggestions if your system reboots randomly, or during heavy I/O: |

If the system has any of the following symptoms, refer to RETAIN tip H163165:
- Spontaneous reboots
- WINMGMNT.EXE high CPU utilization
- mouse jerkiness
- slow GUI performance
- system appears hung for 6-15 minutes after logon
- I2C communication errors in Service Processor log
- Go through the system and reseat the CPU, memory and adapter cards. Make sure all cables are connected correctly and check to make sure that the I2C cable is connected properly.

Are there any devices sharing IRQs? Sometimes this can cause system hangs. Things to watch for are loss of Ethernet connectivity during large file copies or heavy I/O. Refer to:
- High processor utilization with ServeRAID version 4.5 under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
- Check setup errors and service-processor logs.
- Check event logs/abend logs in your operating system.
- Run hardware diagnostics.
- Check your device driver versions. It is always suggested to use the latest/current drivers for devices in the system.

Do you have a faulty or misconfigured UPS supply? Remove the UPS to test the system without it.
Notes:
- Servers - Unusual hangs/system freeze when under heavy network load
- IBM eServer xSeries 220 - Network is sluggish or unresponsive when the server runs with GUI
- Servers - System loses all Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) function under Microsoft Windows 2000
- Servers - Novell NetWare ABENDs in NWPA
- If Netfinity 5100 / IBM eServer xSeries 230, you will need 1 or more additional power supplies if 4+ hard disk drives or if adding a Tape Drive
- If Netfinity 6000R / IBM eServer xSeries 350, you may need additional power supplies if using 4+ hard disk drives

If it is determined that the Server has a faulty part or if assistance beyond the above instructions is needed, please contact your local IBM Support Center for further assistance. Please have the Machine Type-Model and Serial Number ready for the support person. Thank you!
