General information

The IBM 100/200GB LTO Tape Drive includes the following features and benefits:

  • 100 GB native capacity -- speeds up backups and reduces costs by reducing the number of tape changes required.
  • 15 MBps native backup rate (54 GB/hr(2) native; up to 108 GB/hr compressed) decreases system time allotted to backups, freeing system and IT resources for other tasks.
  • Eight-channel Read-While Write speeds the operation of the drive and ensures data integrity.
  • Improved cartridge load mechanism eliminates dropped leader problems.
  • Ultra2 SCSI (LVDS) interface, which supports up to 80 MBps system
The IBM 100/200GB Linear Tape Open (LTO) Tape Drive provides a new benchmark for mid- to high-end e-server xSeries systems requiring a high-capacity, high-performance, and high-reliability tape drive. Using its onboard hardware data compression feature, and assuming a 2:1 compression ratio, this drive can store up to 200 GB(1) per cartridge, at a backup rate of up to 108 GB/hr.

Key Prerequisites:
  • This drive requires a 5.25-inch full-high (FH) bay for installation.
  • For optimal performance, drive should be connected to a dedicated Ultra2 LVD SCSI controller, using an Ultra2 LVD-compatible SCSI cable and terminator.

Technical specifications
Performance specifications as known at time of announcement
The new 100/200 GB LTO internal tape drive establishes new benchmarks in capacity and performance for server backup. Its 100GB native capacity per cartridge marks at least a 66% increase over the current industry leaders. With native throughput of 54GB per hour, LTO tops the previous fastest drive by at least 10GB per hour, a 25% performance improvement. Because LTO standard system interface is Ultra2 SCSI (LVDS), it can support up to 80MB per second system data transfer rate. The 100/200 GB LTO internal tape drive is backed by a three year warranty.

LTO is designed to compete with AIT, DLT, 8mm and to a lesser extent, DDS4. It is a great solution for customers whose server infrastructure has outgrown the DDS Standard.
