Error description
The incremental backup of a VMware guest protected with IBM Storage Protect Plus using the IBM Storage Protect Open Snap Store Manager (OSSM) enabled VADP proxy can result in sending the entire guest data instead of the expected changed data since the previous backup. This happens only if the SPP backup policy contains multiple VM backups. Example, seen in the IBM Storage Protect Plus backup job log: Day 0: Base backup of VM IBM_TEST INFO,CTGGA2247,Will do full backup for VM IBM_TEST ... INFO,CTGGA0497,Finished VADP backup of VM (Base) IBM_TEST with status complete VM total provisioned size 580.00 GB. VM total transferred 578.22 GB ---- Day 1: Incremental backup of VM IBM_TEST INFO,CTGGA2110,Will do incremental backup for VM IBM_TEST INFO,CTGGA0496,Finished backup of VM (Incremental) IBM_TEST with status complete Total bytes transferred 487.44 MB ---- Day 2: Incremental backup of VM IBM_TEST is correctly requested but a full backup is unexpectedly executed INFO,CTGGA2110,Will do incremental backup for VM IBM_TEST INFO,CTGGA0496,Finished backup of VM (Incremental) IBM_TEST with status complete Total bytes transferred 578.22 GB From the IBM Storage Protect server side there are two conditions to be met for this APAR to apply. 1. The activity log shows the following synchronize commands after the backup completed: ANR2017I Administrator IBM-OSSM-ADMIN issued command: SYNCHRONIZE VOLUME nodeid=XX fsid=YY (SESSION: 500) The synchronization command is an expected behavior. 2. The output of the following select command from the Db2 prompt being the IBM Storage Protect Server instance user is not empty : "select pasi.nodeid, pasi.fsid FROM tsmdb1.pa_snapshot_info pasi WHERE pasi.nodeid=<node_id> and NOT EXISTS(select 1 from tsmdb1.pa_snapshot_objects paso where pasi.nodeid=paso.nodeid and pasi.fsid=paso.fsid and paso.snapid=0) group by pasi.nodeid, pasi.fsid order by pasi.nodeid, pasi.fsid" If the output returns rows like ... NODEID FSID ------- ------ 35 101 35 102 35 103 3 record(s) selected. then this APAR applies. IBM Storage Protect versions affected: IBM Spectrum Protect server version 8.1.18 and later on platforms AIX® or Linux® x86_64. Additional Keywords: TSM, Spectrum Protect, TS015501212, OSSM, Spectrum Protect Plus, SPP, incremental, base
