AsciiOutput Behaviour Inconsistent When Threads Write to Same File in Parallel

Troubleshooting

Problem

When using AsciiOutput to write to the same file in parallel, the behaviour is not consistent

Symptom

  • Shared file is written by both processes with the content in a random order
  • Shared file is overwritten by the last writer since the file is empty when it opens
  • Fails due to the process being unable to open the shared file

Resolving The Problem

The Planning Analytics Engine does not support writing to the same file, at the same time, from parallel processes.  Doing so can result in unpredictable behaviour depending on when file locks are acquired and processes complete.
